Martin vor dem heiligen Tempel - Martin in front of the holy doom

In 1993 I received my final U2 infection. Though I did like this band before, but in summer 1993, when I was on a vacation in London, I saw them coincidentally at the (old) Wembley statium during their Zooropa Tour. It's been the best Rock tour ever yet for me. No bad start for my first U2 concert. After that, I've seen them once again at the old statium which was in 1997 on the Poptour, and also in Nuremberg in the same year. - However on this 360 Tour I've seen the show already in Berlin, but as we say so - one time is none time, it had to be London as well, and this even twice.
So on friday aug. 14 late afternoon I took the underground, also named Tube to Wembley Park station, where the beautiful and impressing view of Wembley welcomed me. I have to say, at this new construction this huge bow they architects probably copied from the cologne arena, at least I guess so. Very impressing was also the fact of the perfect organization. Everything went very relaxed without any hazzle. Die Hard fans had already waited since the early morning hours to catch the best spots after getting in. The slogan is once again:who is first, gets the best places. The securities were really great and the Waste Manager pretty active. 4.30 p.m. the doors opened. And they let people in in groups of 200, then the waste manager came, cleaned up, before they would let the next 200 people in. After that you had your ticket read by an electronic machine and you got your wristbangle in one certain colour. I went straight to the center space, but there is was already that much crowded, that I rather prefered moving out again and get myself a good position directly at the catwalk.
Supportbands weren't that good and rather boring. They were 'The Hours' and another group named 'Elbow' who were even worse. There was no sign of heating up the audiance. But never mind, as the audiance which consisted of 90.000 people took care about themselves by doing some La-olas. So in the end there was a brilliant atmosphere.

Technische Tour Fakten
Technical Tour Facts

The U2 stage was huge and seemed like a spaceship. Although the technique didn't overroll you, because the stage was open to all sides and angles. (That's why the called it the 360 Degrees tour). And so the contact to the band was much closer. After the David Bowie Intro - 'Space Oddity' the magic started off. Larry came first on stage and started the rhythm to 'Breathe' a song from the new album. Anyway, to start with 4 new songs it quite a risk, not so for U2, because they don't really belong to this kind of nostalgica groups. Even the not so much beloved 'Get On Your Boots' came across well done and brought some movement into the crowd. In the darkness the stage was even more impressive with it's genius lightshow and circled video screen, which could be moved in any way.

There was nothing to complain about the setlist either. Old and new very well mixed. "Unforgettable Fire" and "Ultraviolet" weren't that much expected on this tour. And the second mentioned song, Bono appeared in a LED Outfit and a mike looking like a car wheel, which was let down on a rope, and he bounced across the stage holding on to it. It was just brilliant. My only critics refer  to the echoing Wembley sound (but that's not the band's fault) and the rather tired performance of 'With Or Without You' of Bono. (maybe he was just sick and tired of this track) But apart from that, it was the most impressive show, you could even possibly think of. It was so huge, but at the same time so intimate - including a band with lots of fun to play and a very enthusiastic audiance. At some points I forgot to close my mouth. - 'Moment Of Surrender' was the end and final of this first class show, before we all made our way back to London Central.

At this masses of people, I thought, I'm gonna be back at the hotel in morning mist. But it was absolutely impressing how the english are organized. Just one hour later I was back at my hotel. We here in Germany should take an example by that.

I
fell into my bad happily and very pleased, just to get up the next day and repeat he whole magic all over again, but without my two mates from the day before, who just had spoiled themselves with only one U2 show.

After I did know somebody, who had waited for me in our row, after he had queued up since lunch time, I could manage to get to the front of the barriere with this trick: - 'I only got myself a drink quickly'. The result was, that one hour later I found myself back in the inner circle very close and very relaxed directly in front of the stage. Again there were two tireing supportacts (once again 'The Hours' and the second one was named 'Glas Vegas' instead of 'Elbow' tonight. But they weren't much better. Once again it was absolutely crowded and almost sold out, and everybody expected a great show. The result was even better as on the night before. Because within the inner circle it seemed like a real clubshow, with the only difference that there were 90.000 fans.

Es wurden 4 andere Stücke gespielt, die allesamt Favoriten von mir waren: "Until the End of the World" , "Stay (Faraway so close)", "New Years Day" und mein (absolutes Highlight) "Bad".

It was truly great, to see the band that close. Also the choice of songs were better than the night before. There were 4 different songs included, which are all favorites of mine.
"Until the End of the World" , "Stay (Faraway so close)", "New Years Day" and my absolute highlight "Bad".

This show had been a real dream, and it was truly on the same level as my first U2 Wembley experience in 1993. How they ever will top this is a big question to me. But U2 are always good for yet another surprise. In the end of 2009 there is already a new album announced, and the 360 degrees tour will be continued in 2010... I'm looking already forward to it.....
