Question:
what does a saugage taste without the mustard?Well, it tastes okay, but
something is missing, ain't it?! And that's what it feel at one more gig
of The Sweet, who are, to get it straight, Andy Scott... and some
other good musicians, who are trying to keep up the glammer spirit
from the past and even reanimate it. Alright, we wouldn't mind it, if
all those great hits like ‚Fox on The Run’,
‚Love Is Like Oxigen’ and ‚Ballroom Blitz’ did get the right
feeling. Yes of course you can't get the old times back to the present,
and you can't get back Mick Tucker or Brian Connolly, who both have
passed away quite a while ago. Apart from that, who knows, whether it
would be the same, if these guys would still be rocking. But there is no
when, or what if....
The fact is, that Andy Scott is trying to keep the flame burning -
somehow. But let's face it. First of all, this man has still to make a
living, and second, if Andy would have had a decent solocarriere, the
legend around Sweet would still be a legend and nothing else. That's for
sure. Am I wrong or not, remembering that there have even been two
variations of Sweet in the Eightees. And this one here were named 'Andy
Scott's Sweet'
So whatsoever, people fight and people make peace again with each other.
Or they go to heaven like Connolly and Tucker. Anyway, we are here and
today and now and tonight. And up there is simply 'The Sweet' of the
present, a little older, and not as speedy anymore, and most of all no
glitter and sunshine anymore, exept maybe Andy's golden sportshoes. But
people change throughout their lifes. And most probably the outfit from
the early seventies wouldn't suit into today's taste of time. But the
point is, - exspecially this glitter was the special brand of the Sweet.
And please don't call it glamrock. Because this expression didn't even
exist at those times.
However, Andy Scott is still an excellent guitarplayer, and he's doing
his job very well, including his usual glas of white wine, served
inbetween from his guitar technician from time to time on the
sideboard. Yeah, we ain't not the young wild ones anymore, but we still
know how to ignore mineral water but favour the so called good ghost in
the bottle to load up the individual spirit with high energy.
Unfortunately it doesn't really help tonight at this show here, which is
disturbed by sound problems, interrupting the drive of the party.
The set doesn't feel like a flowing stream, but rather onesided -
somehow. Only the songs itselves let the aprox. 200 fans wake up fromt
their lethargy and put the hands up in the air.
Over all the vibe is missing tonight, which puts the magic of the past
days into the present. And I presume, even the musicians must have felt
it. Because the show is a bit too short and includes only one encore - 'Ballroom
Blitz' - of course.
You can turn it round in which direction ever, but I once again get to
my, almost favorite word: the sparkle, - the famous sparke which usually
jumps from the band to the audiance, was probably on a holiday tonight.
