Al Di Meola

I don't have any words for this here. What a hell of a guitarist!!!
Every fusion jazz freak in the world knows Al Di Meola at least since the famous 'Friday Night In San Francisco' together with John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia in 1981. By the way, Al was discovered at the age of 10 by none other than Chick Corea. Meanwhile he can look back to 21 soloalbums, 7 samplers and 12 coproductions. And he belongs to the top ligue of guitarists in this world.

This man is the recarnation of 100% knowledge and talent. But he carries it with such a lightness and hanging loose that not many people here at the sold out Prinzregenten theatre are aware about his brilliance. You won't be able to escape the magic, whether you want or not. But you wouldn't want anyway when first started to listen to those stylistic sound cascades, a mixture of latinamerican- rock rhythm, with many jazz influences and even more fusion. Slow motion acoustic performed in a sitting position, exchanges with the electric guitar played right in front of the stage - standing of course. And all this made with his unique techniques. The audiance takes over the physical action by applauding and giving Al standing ovations.  The mastro himself constantly says, that he's got the impression, Germany understands his music best. No clue, whether this is a polite compliment or a true statement.

Okay, I admit, - no setlist, no definition of single tunes in detail. But Al Di Meola's music anyway flows into itselfes, and in the end it sounds like huge whole piece of music. Shame, that my faves 'Race With The Devil On A Spanish Highway' or 'Mediterrian Sundance' are not included in the program. Therefore our genius takes a bath in sound clouds made of his latest album 'vocal rendevouz' and the one before 'Flesh on Flesh' and some more stuff from the past. And he puts himself into kinda trance condition.  He is god damn good, honestly, and this without overdone improvisations. He's got written notes in front of him, but doesn't even waste a glimpse at them. It rather seems, they are there to make the atmosphere complete. Somehow it doesn't fit. Posh aura in a classical theatre, filled with a rather conservative audiance, who are listening to intellectual music, made from fove musicians in jeans and sloppy shirt and a - take it easy - Rock'n'Roll attitude. And this is certainly no rock'n'roll. But like I said before - it's the attitude. And he's definately got it. I know him!
Never mind, what counts is a great concert on the highest level you can get, and you meld like vanilla ice in the sunshine.
Wonderful - and hope soon again.......
