dun' no, how often I've seen him
playing live on stage in the past. To be honest - no clue. I just
remember last time with U.F.O. in Munich a few years back. But when I
compare the person Michael Schenker from then with the presten, they are
worlds apart. Because this here and now is not the moody exentric guy,
who transfered kind of a feeling on stage, as if he was playing just for
himself not noticing his surrounding. Like it happened at this U.F.O.
Gig in the past.
I mean, maybe I'm wrong. Although I'm pretty much surprised in a
positive way, what huge positive aura the guitarist has got presently
when he steps out into the public. And you don't feel much from the
egocentric mood of the past. Only one thing stayed for sure, and that's
his brilliant talent of playing the guitar. Yeah, of course, you don't
forget skills like that. And Michael has always been busy over the years
(see official website) If I started to count all his releases and the
action he's been involved, it'll become too much within this review. But
that's not the sense of my talking here. However as I said before, he's
more energetic and seems younger than ever before.
The Michael Schenker Group 2006 is a young band
featuring apart from Michael - Wayne Findley (keyb), Rev Jones (Bass)
Pete Holmes (drums) and finnish singer Jari Tjura. And the boss doesn't seem much
older than the rest of the bunch. I'm not gonna start to get into that
wonderful recarnation, but rather try to analyse this performance here.
I have to admit it's not only once, that I'm surprised tonight. Starting
with the fact, that Schenker doesn't play any endless solos on his
guitar, but places colourful arrangements in different ways into the set.
And most of all, he does ist with all his heart. You can realise that
from the very beginning.
Another very nice fact is, that he leaves it up
to his band to be the centerpoint, most of all bassist Rev Jones, who
draws the attention of the aprox. 250 fans with the swing of his dreadlock, the energetic
movement and the - almost picasso paintings on his skin. The
announcements and comments inbetween are done by frontman Jari,
who shows the only weak point in the show. No, it's not his voice, which
is actually pretty good in catching the musical harmonies. It's more or
less the fact, that he seems to stiff and frozen on stage. But okay,
therefore we got rastcurl Rev, who moves for two. Despite of all this,
in the end the focus is still Michael himself , who just let's his
guitar do the talking - good!
The set featers old MSG stuff and U.F.O. classics (see setlist) and all
the fans in here sing along when 'Lights Out' and 'Doctor Doctor' come
up. At the same time the current record gets promoted as well, as this
is a collection and Best of - the past 25 years. Memories come up with
fresh energy and a modern touch, - that's the slogan, performed with a
whole lotta charme. Finishing off with 'Rock Bottom' and many shake
hands and even some autographs afterwards.... if somebod had told me all
that five years ago, I'd not believed it.
I for my part think, we got him back, back from the dessert and back
home to Germany, and hopefully still very often live on stage in the
future.
And what's up to U.F.O. ..... never say never again.... - that's what
I've been told...
