Hey,
I just died in his Arms tonight... -
but that was in 1989. I can't remember the exact day, but it happened at
the legendary Marquee Club in London at a concert of the Cutting Crew,
who got nostalgic people dreaming and lovers beeing even more
sentimental. And Kevin was a real charmer. His guitar playing was great,
his look was sexy as well as his slight canadian accent underlined with
the dark vibe of his voice. Kevin had this special way to express his
feelings and multiply his interesting aura. And all this just by beeing
around. And yep, to die in his arms, would have been worth a challenge.
Maybe that's why this special day has never vanished out of my memory.
Now, the Cuttin Crew has been around now for quarter of a century,
unfortunately with quite a break inbetween. But there has never been an
official seperation. Founded by the english musician Nick Van Eede and
the canadian one Kevin S.McMichal the band celebrated two big hits in
the eighties which was
(I Just) Died In Your Arms
und I've
Been In Love Before. In fact the first mentioned song went no.1 in
the US -Billboard Charts. And that's why the name Cutting Crew
never got forgotten, and this song is still played on radio. Yep of
course the group had more to offer than just these two songs. But it was
them, to make the band historic. By the way the band itself is not
that sentimental, (remembering Kevins cheak grin) not in those days and
not presently.
In the early nineties
Van Eede and McMichael went seperate ways, and the Cutting Crew was put
on ice, - 'till ...... in spring 2006 Nick decided to rerelease his
project and same named album 'Grinning Souls' again under the name of
Cutting Crew. It's a beautiful piece of music and stylistically
following the usual path of the band. And tonight they stand up there on
stage at the Village Club in Habach in front of only about 30 fans.
That's the brutal truth, though I've been told, at other places there
were at least aprox. 300 guests. -What Can I say, that's Bavaria...
However, there's only the frontman left from the old line up. But that's
not the point. First of all, Nick's still got this huge aura, and
second, he has got himself some excellent musicians in the band
including Gareth on guitar. And once again the
typical soft poprock is leading

Rather interesting is the fact, that many songs start pretty quiet, but
develope faster and faster from second to second to end up in almost
hard Rock'n'Roll. Nick manages with a lot humour to encourage the few
souls here to sing along. And the comfi livingroom atmosphere exchanges
with a rock houseparty. Gareth sings 'run to the hills's and shows the
metal finger sign, whereby Nick says one sec later : 'we are too old for
that'. - Now I would say, Iron Maiden are a bit older than you are boys,
ain't they?! It's never too late to rock hard. And it even gets better,
when the drummer plays bass and the bassist hits the drums - just about
but very amusing.

In the end, how
could it be otherwise.... - 'I Just Died In Your Arms...' in the
acoustic and then normal ultra lenght version. And that's exactly the
minute, where I have to remember back in time at this certain night at
the Marquee Club in London and about Kevin. But Kevin S.McMichael ain't
here anymore. He died on januar 31. in 2003. I wanna dedicate this
review to him. I'm sure he would have loved to be here - tonight!
