...you
don't exactly need to be a lover of classical music to know at least the
most popuar pieces of this stylistic. I'm talking about Beethoven's
fifth symphony - the Eroica, or his ninth - Ode Of Joy. Mozart's little
Nightmusic or Verdi's opera Nabucco. Or like in our case - "also
sprach zarathustra", the acousic frame to Nitzsces lyrics, composed
by none other than Richard Strauss, one of our last great classical
composers, who lived 'till into the 20th century.
Enough of the lection concerning classical tunes, though I dearly do luv
this music as well and not only Rock'n'Roll. It is a fact indeed, that
in the past there have been already many examples of the combination of
classical and modern music. Most famous artists having done this
experiment are certainly Dutch jazzfusion band "Ekseption",
followed by others including brasilian Keyboard legend Eumir Deodato,
who came to fame with his extraordinary version of "Also Sprach
Zarathustra" in 1973. It became a global hitsingle. This piece of
music is included on his first US-Album "Prelude", which was
recorded together with people like Billy Copham on drums, Stanley Clarke
on bass, and John Tropea on guitar.
Before that, the - meanwhile 64 year old musician and producer Deodato
had been very busy in the brasilian Bossa Nova Scene and released
several longplayers in the sixties. - Wtihin the last 20 years, he has
been working mainly in production for other artists, most of all "Kool
And The Gang". First in 2001 Deodate was back on the live scene. In
his home country very well known, also in America, his reputation in
Europa suffered a bit over all this time. That's why he is back now with
a trio to conquer our club landscape again.
Unfortunately the date here in Munich had a fatal sideeffect. Because this
very day one of a hell popular soccer match is going on in our arena here
at the same time. FC Bavaria Munich facing Real Madrid. And 90 percent of
all humans are either on their way to the stadium or sitting in front of
the telly, but not thinking about a half forgotten musical jazz fusion
diamond named Deodato.
And he knows it, and pronounces in one of his statements inbetween the
songs, that he would never play live again, while a soccer match like this
in going on at the same time, regardless who is gonna win the game. He's
right, because there are only about 10 people at the posh nightclub of our
first hotel in town - the Bayrischer Hof. There is a delay anyway, 'till
the first half of the match is over, beeing watched on a hidden TV screen
in the back of the club.
But after that, there is no excuse anymore why not to go on with the gig.
And the Deodato threesome, consisting of Eumir Deodate on keyboard and
piano, Marcelo Mariano also from Brazil on bass and Stefano Paolini from
Italy on drums start the set with a decent mixture of funkelements and
jazz with a touch of Rockmusic. The program is a sort of Best of....
Potpuret, including pieces like ‚Whistle Bump’ and Carly & Carole
. The improvisation is great, Deodato gives his collegues a lot of space
and keeps himself more or less in the back. An extra long version of
"Zarathustra" get's 'em to a break. Nobody knows, whether there
will be a second part or this performance is finished.
After some discussion the band comes back to play some more music
for part two. And you can realize, that the mainevent tonight in Munich is
finished (The Bavarina team has won) and sunddenly the club is crowded 'till
the last place. One thing is for sure, those late soccer fans, who
eventually found their way to here in the end, have surely not paid
for a ticket anymore but have got the chance to check out this great
musicians for another 30 minutes.
Over all, Zarathustra a.k.a. Deodato has played, spoken and won with an
interesting musical happening for us classical lovers of fusion
music, - no doubt about that.
Like I mentioned before, It has only been the date, which didn't fit in
tonight.
