Okay, whoever is asking now, who this man is, - hasn't checked my
website properly. Because I've done reviews on this artist at least twice
before. And to repeat myself---- Victor Bailey certainly belongs to this
super ligue of great bassists like Tony Levin, Marcus Miller, Victor
Wooden, Doug Wimbish, TM Stevens or Billy Sheehan. Unfortunately very
often those musicians don't always get the acceptance and recognition
they'd deserve.
So here once again, Vic Bailey comes originally from Philadelphia and
started playing drums at a very early age. At 11 he changed to the bass,
and his biggest idol was Jaco Pastorius. In fact, he later took his place
in the legendary jazz fusion Weather Report, when Jaco died in 1982.
Within his carriere, Victor played the bass also for madonna, Santana,
Chaka Khan and Bill Evans, just to name a few.
Jazz,
Fusion, Philly-Funk and Soul are the Ingredience of the grooving Sounds,
Vic produces. He doesn't like it, when he is called only a pure
jazzmusician.
Meanwhile the 45 year old artist has released a few solorecords as well
which increased his reputation within the certain circles. And he always
comes back to Europe to do a Club tour, like right now and here tonight.
He's got a new band consisting of world class drummer Lenny White, who is
a legend for himself for his work with "Return To Forever" and
"Chick Corea". Also there is Casey Benjamin (sax) and Peter
Horvath (key).
And here we are again at our posh Nightclub at Munich's Hotel No. 1 - the
Bayerischer Hof.
I
for my part luv this Location, because the posh atmosphere is milded
by some nice comfortability.

So, there is
nothing wrong by showing up in Jeans and casual outfit and not getting
told off about a certain dress code or anything like that. On the other
hand, there is one weak point about all this invironment. A small beer is
up to almost 6 Euros and a glas of wine up to 8,-- And to be honest, you
don't sit there with only one glas for the whole evening. So such a visit
can be rather expensive. But this nightclub has put it's focus on those so
often underrated musicians from the Jazz, Fusion and Soul corner, and we
sometimes get some great performances here, like Joe Zawinung, Will
Calhoun, and Vernon Reid or the one tonight for instance.
Okay,
this is something different here to the usual focus rockmusic on this site.
But as I always use to say, - music is music, there is only two kinds -
good and bad. And every music has got it's rights to be here. So when
worldclass musicians like Victor Bailey visit us here in Munich, for me
it's a must to go there. My god - what a talent. Most other bassists
dissappear in his shade. Noone else plays this instrument with such a
passion and intensity, though it looks like, he's playing around saying -
take it easy.... Best thing to do is closing your eyes and let the
sound and tunes have a go on you. His repertoire includes solomaterial as
well as Weather Report bits and pieces and stuff from Return To Forever.
And there is a Lenny White composition as well. All three musicians get
their solo and prove their talent. - By the way, the set is devided into
two parts, like usual, which each last for about one hour. And we get one
encore done by Vic alone. This audiance here, which consists of Jazz
Fusion lovers as well as Bass fetischists or just Hotel guests show their
appreciation by giving Vic and the guys some good aplause.
Anyway, Mr. Bailey once again has showed, that he really belongs to the
top ligue. Although he stayed on the ground with his two feet and doesn't
want more than just presenting people his music.
Vic, I have named you the Beethoven of Fusion in the past. You haven't
forgotten about this. And I still stick with it... that's what you are -
no kiddin'. And I can only advice everybody to go and check out a Victor
Bailey show. Because he's not only playing the bass, he plays just
brilliant music. Last but not leasts it's only the question about your
personal taste of music left.... But that's up to you freaks....
