Yes of
course we do know the name! Together with his older brother Mark
Knopfler he founded the legendary group 'Dire Straits' in the early
eighties. But after two albums and superstar status, David left to
follow his own path. Last year the 52 years old Scotsman released his
10th album 'Songs Of The Siren'. His music he describes as songs, which
reminds you about a time, when a vinyl record was something exiting. A
time where you set down to listen carefully to every song on the
longplayer. That feeling David still wants to express in his music.
Next to the music his interests are photography as well as painting and
lyrics. He constantly writes about different subjects. "Bluff Your Way
In The Rock Business"
is a funny and only half serious adviser, beeing published in 1996.
Knopfler rather is a
friend of the thoughtful quiet tunes, with a touch of sadness. That's
why his concerts belong to the rather calm atmosphere. So the audiance
right here at Munich's Schlachthof venue consists more of the elderly
generation. They are sitting there comfortably with a good glas of red
wine and are listening to the Songs of the Siren. Because it's still
those tracks beeing promoted on the current tour. Knopfler goes on
distance with his past and the Dire Straits. Only the shade of his big
brother sometimes catches up with him, and if it's only the same name.
He starts his set with an acoustic guitar, accompanied by a bass. His
songs are telling from life on the country, harmonies and Life itself
with it's edges. At some point, David is joined by another guitar and
some drumbeats. He plays the piano inbetween as well to offer us some
kind of best of.... but mainly 'Songs Of The Siren' of course.
Yes he is in fact a brilliant musician, a songwriter of fine tunes,
which need a certain mood, otherwise the dismiss the wanted effect.
Not everybody's cup of tea to be honest. Personally I do like the music.
But it is the way of the performance, the local circumstances and the
fact, that the gig is played in two parts with a break, let me leave
early during the second set.
Anyway, the romantic sense is satisfied once again. And it was worth
while to come here to check David Knopfler out - the dreamer, the
soundspecialist, the individualist... You must have seen him at least
once live on stage....
