...and munich is calling for a Punky thunderstorm in five dimensions. Yippiieehhh, the implants are shaking within foundation and call for a rebellion of everybody's pine muscles. And all that, because the Horrorpunk named Misfits are celebrating their 30th anniversary. Not misfit is the slogan, that's what Marilyn Monroe and Clarke Gable showed already in the same titled movie back in the sixties. And this movie title had been adapted by a guy named Glenn Danzig and his group back in the seventies. Next to Danzig there was Gerald Caiafa a.k.a. Jerry Only, who became fashion designer als well, when he created this special look, again adapted by a figur from an american TV show, named Crimson Ghost. From then this has been the brand of "the Misfits". In 1983 Mr. Danzig quit the band and founded Samheim and later Danzig. For many years there had been a legal battle going on because on the name rights. In the middle of the 1990's Jerry Only became part of a rather successless christian rockband "Kryst The Conqueror" and then reformed the Misfits in a new dress. Since then the band is going on with changing line ups. The Single 'Psycho In The Wax Museum' is the last new product which came out in 2006. And now after more than three decades, no new CD and only one original member, the Misfits are back in Germany to prove, that their punk is still exploding and is still very much alive. Jerry Only is accompanied bei Dez Cadena on guitar (he is part of the band since 2002) and Roberto 'Robo' Valverde, who was in the group in 1982-83, and is now back again for the past two years, when Marky Ramone left. Aprox. 900 friends of the sophisticated punk are waiting for things to come along tonight. The entry is done by three supportbands of the genre. Whereby, you might guess it, I missed out again on the first one The Idori’ . But I've been told from several people, that the hungarian punkers weren't bad at all.Number 2 comes from Ireland and is Blood Or Whiskey’. This lot is
going on since 1993 and they are trying successfully to combine folkrhythm
and punk. And yes, it sounds rather interesting. For me myself there is
just this special little something missing, as we say so. But the
irish definately are situated above the average my dear
friends, I can only say, this group has got some class, actually very much
class indeed. Compared to the band before, they are much harder. But the
thing impressing me most, is the fact, that I've hardly every seen a
singer with such a physical condition going hand in hand with the fast
rhythm.
So just before the Misfits are on, Charly is climbing up the stage with his usual beer bottle. Because you'll never see him without it. Not as long as I've seen the UK Subs live on stage in my life. And I've seen them quite often yet. David Perez a.k.a. Charlie Harper is a Londoner and meanwhile 63 years of age. No I'm not joking. IN 1976 the UK Subs started out and now belong to those kind of punk cult bands from then. Charlie is fitter than ever and beats every young punker what's up to physical condition. He is the living proof, that punk is not a matter of age. With the right attitude and of course the just mentioned condition, everything is possible. Like discribed in former reviews on the website, Charlie gets the walls shaking, and within seconds he's got the kiddies here under his spell. Like in the Misfits, he is the only surviving original in the UK Subs. But it is the spirit, which makes the magic. Little Charlie develops the jungle scream into a opera tenor of a nitingale. Wonderful indeed!!! 63 years of age and not a wink tired proved by almost still nonstop touring around the globe. And at least once a year the UK Subs are appearing here in Munich. Maybe it's also our beer, Charlie luv's so much.
However,
the Misfits will have to put on quite an effort, after Charlie's
extroverted show, to top it. And they can't do it, at least not for us critical music lovers, like I am one. Also the average mood in the audiance ain't that energetic like at the UK Subs show. Jerry Only hasn't changed at all, what's up to the look. The mask and the image hasn't changed over all those years. And whatever is below that, doesn't really matter, does it?! With more light and some decibel more, the threesome start off for their 39 songs including punk marathon, which lasts only about 90 minutes. (You still can't top the Ramones mind you!)
But
seriously, during the performance of the Ami Punks, there is a certain
monotony developing. the famous red line, leading through all 39 tracks
does not show any curves and edges, at least what's up to three quarter of
the show. It get's stuck at a certain level. Only within the fourth
quarter I can make out some breaks and changes within the stylistic. |
