It is indeed a curios thing
with this musician. Every time when I see him playing with his Rockband
Living Colour, I think, that you can hear, that Vernon Reid originally
comes out from Jazz. And each time I see him playing with Masque or like
tonight with the Free Form Funky Freqs, I think... yeha this man got his
roots actually in rockmusic.
So what?! Now, I actually assume, that Vernon Reid can be described best
as a Cross Over artist, who started out in every kind of music. Apart from
that, he's a genius on guitar, and that's not overdone. The american
Rolling Stone voted him as one of the 100 best ever guitarists of all
time. While beeing a superstar already in artist- and insider circles, he
is still fighting for the deserved resonance in the brought public. There
are maybe some reasons, why he didn't do so yet. First of all, Vernons
music ain't the most commercial one with this - stick in your ears
guarantee . And second, his art and talent on guitar goes beyond normal
dimensions, which is just too much for the average consumer. While some
musicians ow their heads in deep respect, the normal guy rather shakes his
head in misunderstanding.
So to get it straight... whatever Vernon touches is absolutely brilliant
but definately not a simple meal.
I for my part have checked out this guitarist several times in the past,
whether it was with Living Colour or with Masque. Now that one here
tonight is strike no. 3 - his fusionband - Free Form Funky Freqs.
The name says literatually all what's up to musical perspectives - Funk,
Jazz and Rock. It's a total instrumental project which goes into
dimensions beyond the average entertainment. And just to mention it, with
this group, Vernon Reid ain't a pure soloartist, but part of the threesome,
which also consists of Calvin Weston on drums and the bassist with the
almost unspeakable name - Jamaaladeen Tacuma.
The band was
born in Manhattan, NY, and has got one release out yet. At a show of the
Free Form Funky Freqs, each of the three musicians shows his talent
without sticking too much out as a individual. Yeah, maybe Vernon owns the
best known name so far, but believe me, the other two guys are brilliant
musicians as well. It's funking, it's rocking and an almost acrobatic
Guitar stint is exchanging with a - Race with the devil - on bass,
accompanied by many fine drum beats. A very impressing drumkit by the way,
taking a lot of space on the small stage in the Nightclub. Unfortunately
I'm not a drummer to explain you this instrument a bit better. And also
those countless pedals, Vernon uses, obviously reach beyond the normal use.

One more word concerning our posh, but comfortible Nightclub, which is a)
well known for concerts of this kind, but b) also pretty expensive what's
up to the drinks. But well, this is the No.1 hotel in Munich, and the
status is set high. The sound is pretty clear, but sometimes a bit too
loud. One new thing we got actually. - No smoking anymore during concerts.
But shortly that won't be a topic anyway anymore with a general smoking
ban by law, starting with the new year. So during the usual break in the
middle of the set, most of the audiance is storming out the place into the
hallway to satisfy their addiction. Tonight I guess, there are about 100
people on the spot, including fans but also guests of the house. -
Actually I've seen this place here only once really crowded, and that was,
when Joe Zawinul played here about 4 years ago. Meanwhile he ain't alive
anymore.
However, I always liked this club and I still luv coming here and
also pay my 6 Euros for one small beer. But I can also asure you, that in
here I've seen some of the best musicians ever. Vernon Reid and his
Free Form Funky Freqs definately belong to them. That's why I can only
advice everybody, who luv's great music, to check out the schedule of the
venue regularely. It's worth it, - it really is.....
