..... but they've just been here last
december, - some of you might say spontaniously. - Yep, that's true, but....
first of all they were just second supportact for Motörhead in our
behated Zenith venue. Now, just about 3 months later we are here in the
smaller but much nicer Backstage Halle. - And second - this time our
New York thrashmetal dinos are the kings of the road and not just
marionettes with restrictions. This my friends is a hell of a difference.
Because exspecially Overkill knock you off your shoes so much harder and
better within an intimate atmosphere as in a huge venue like the Zenith.
in front of 5.000 Motörhead fans. (Although that performance wasn't bad
either)
Anyway, as much I like to check out young and new acts lately, the more I
realize tonight, that you're much better off with some of the oldies.
Exspecially Overkill, who's carriere spans more than 20 years, and I saw
them quite often live on stage in this 2 decades, are more than just good
for an explosive show and a high quality standard. To be honest I can't
feel a lot of the aging process, and they still beat the hell outta
themselves and the stage they just standing on, better and stronge than
most of the youngsters who are around.
Munich is the first stop over on on the german dates, and Bobby 'Blitz'
Elsworth says later after the show: ' It feels like coming home'! Yes of
course it does, because most of your fans are situated here in Europe,
don't forget this.
Same night, there is a huge german star playing the sold out Olympiahalle
in front of 12.000 people. But right now nothing in the world would let me
exchange Overkill for that mega event.
The evening is starting off with a prolog of a band named Drone.....

...
a band from Celle, Germany, who have formed in 2004 in the metal landscape.
Drone became well known, when they won the international final to the
Metal Battle in 2006. They've got two releases - 'Octane' from 2006 and 'Head
On Collison' on year later. Drone are Moritz Hempel (voc/git), Martin
Froese (Bass/voc), Marcelo Vasquez (git) and Felix Hoffmeyer (drums). You
can't deny these boys a certain potential. And you feel their routine they
won over the time by playing countless gigs. But in the end it's the
frontman, who pulls most attention. Yes, - well done, that's all I can say
(no setlist unfortunately)
And I for my part, I think, I've taken another century shot below....

Number 2 within the threesome are Mortal
Sin....

I know them from
somewhere, that's my first thought shooting through my grey cells. No
surprise.... and there we are... they have already existed in the eighties
as well and soon became Australians metal export no.1. It would be too
much to devide their history into pieces now. But it's a fact, that Mortal
Sin broke up in 1998 and cmae back together in 2004 with a fresh attitude
and vengeance. Only singer mat Maurere and bassist Andy Ettichiou are left
from the original line up. They are now accompanied by Mick Sultana on
guitar, Nathan Shea also on guitar and Luke Cook on drums.
'An Absence Of Faith' is the title of the first record since 1997, which
came out last year. And this one is supposed to be promoted here
with style a decent structure in a post eighties thrash attitude. The only
critics I've got is, that I've got more than once the impression, that the
frontman role is more up to the bassist than to the singer, who holds
himself too much back. (unfortunately no setlist either). But on the whole
and in generell, the australian cocktail consists of new stuff
from
that just mentioned album and the old classic tunes like 'Lebanon from the
album 'Mayhemic Destruction' 1987, or 'I AmImmortal' from die LP 'Face Of
Despair' 1989. Everything is not stirred, but well shaked. Mortal Sin
certainly also belong to the old school metalbands, but don't sound dusty
at all. One thing is for sure, these australiens are back again with a lot
of enthusiasm. And I'm pretty sure, we'll hear a lot more of them in
the future.

The
very last day is errupting just after 10 p.m. ands sweaps away even the
very last dessert flea on the imaginery venue carpet. What on earth shall
I whisper in your ears and eyes about this lot. Bobby 'Blitz' still look
like 25 (yeah at least from a certain distance :-))) and he proves, that
even with half of a methusalem's age you can be fit as a sportsshoe. And
that means something in his case, as he went through quite a few serious
health problems in the past as we all know.
But this boy surely belongs to the lucky category - as we call it in
german - "Stand up Man", never drowning, never let's himself
down within the past 28 Years.
And on the whole, Overkill are the best example for good wine, which
gets better the older it is.
Bloody hell, no brickly bone stands still in here. And the current
erruption of the Kilauea on Hawaii (look here)
seems like a tiny twinkle compared to the power put out by Blitz,
D.D.Vernie (still on bass), Derek Tailer(Git), Dave Linsk (git) and Ron
Lipnicki(drums) - At least here is a setlist available, on what you
can see, that they don't leave anything out within their dance on the
volcano - to please us old fans in the nostalgic way and give the
youngsters a taste of good metal music.
And I can asure you, tonight, the audiance do not consist only of
oldtimers, but also of young kids, who just start getting into the stuff.
Everything is just right. It starts with the still
unbroken musical passion of those americans, which transfers itselves with
a hell of a pressure from stage on to the audiance, reaches across the
absolute enthusiastic echo of all Munich stagedivers 'till even slowenien
metalheads, who came all the way for this event. For me the highlight is
certainly the medley containing 'I Hate You' and 'Elimination', two songs
from the, -in my opinion best Overkill album 'Years of Decay'.
The enthusiasm shows no mercy. D.D. is doing some singing as well for a
change, Bobby obviously luv's our beer, and his belt goes it's own way.
Shame he discovered it so quickly :-) I mean, you never know, maybe the
button would have dissappeared as well by all this high power performance.
That would have given the individual sexapeal the famous dot on the i - as
we say so. Silly me.... - But however, the female audiance is as spare as
always at concerts of this kind - shame!

This
bonfire is rounded up by a great cover tune of AC/DC's Dirty Deeds Done
Dirt Cheap' and a powerful stagedive of the man himself. 'Fuck you' is the
amen in the chappel, which rather is a translation for thank you for
coming out, - the faith of the audiance and their devotion.

PS: this concert has been surely the best one next to Dr.Feelgood
within
the past 6 months - no kiddin'
