Faunus also known as the god of wolfes, god of the free nature, the protector of farmers and animals and their fields. He appears in various shapes and under many names. He takes care about the fruits of all live and frightens mankind in house and woods and in their dreams.
It is exactly this figure, who gave  the five musicians from munich
their names. As difficult as this ancient god can be described, as difficult is Faun's  music described. They name it Paganfolk, whatever you may think about it. However, I would suggest, you go out and see this lot live on stage. So you can decide by yourself about their stylistic. That's what I'm doing tonight, as I have heard and read a lot about Faun, but never had the pleasure yet personally.

Our Spectaculum Mundi here in Munich promotes this concert with many others. All together it's called the Musica Antiqua Viva Festival from march 20. - april 26. This event here has been transfered to another venue because of the bigger capacity. Maybe it's because the band is  here from munich, or they are just that popular. I guess there are aprox. 450 people here.

The entry comes from 'Dornenreich' from Austria.

Founded in 1995, originally as a Black Metal Band, they are having 6 albums in the background so far. And they have changed their style over the years a 100 percent going to a much more calm and quiet tune played mostly in an acoustic way. And that's what Jochen 'Eviga' Stock (git/voc) and violonist Thomas 'Inve' Riesne, who is in the band since 2006, are doing.
Unfortunately I have no comparison to earlier live gigs in a full line up. So it's only this first impression I've got from this acousticset of the twosome. The rather good lightconditions don't really fit to the dark aura of the music, which is taken from the five and soon even six albums. On may 9. the new longplayer ‚In Die Luft Gespritzt’
From a photographical point of view it's rather good of course. The pieces played by the two austrial musicians on 2 instruments are mystic, intensive and timeless. That's how they describe their music themselves as well. So what, - it's all a matter of taste. And when you move within this kinda musical circles you're well served...

What's up to the vocals, and the singing, yeah well.... whatever you mean by singing, it rather reminds me at the magic spells os magician of Oz. Sometimes it's more or less a whisperiing, sometimes it's almost desperately screamed out. It's a walk between mysterical soundwaves and hocus pocus. But this cocktail of middle age cross over tunes seem to get down very well at the audiance.

Faun are celebrating a premiere tonight with a new stage show and a new band member. Lisa Pawelke has gone and Sandra Elfleich has come in. Reason for the line up change can be read on their official website. 'Faun & The Pagan Folk Festival Live fest. Sieben and In Gowan Ring' is due on march 28. But singer and frontmann Oliver s.a. Tyr Pade admits during the concert, that we can buy the record already in advance at the merchandise booth tonight

Compared to supportband Dornenreich, Faun rather prefer a foggy aura on stage, which suits to the average mood. There is only one who hates the scottisch highland fog, and this is my camera. But because there are no photo restriction in general, I get it anyway without flash , which I hate to use in generell anyway.
Faun use all of those middle age instruments accompanied by some modern help, including a laptop, for what you'd  probably have got burned in those times.

The rest of the clan, despite the boss and the new girl, is Fiona Rüggeberg, playing the backpipe and some other exotic looking stuff. Rüdiger Maul is responsible for the rhythm section - percussion. And Niel Mitra, who got introduced as the fright of all hairdressers,  handles the synthi and the, just mentioned laptop. Yep I believe this immidiately. Though it suits him in a way. The lyrics are telling of myths and nature and come from languages like hungarian, middle highgerman, new highgerman, old-island, latin and saphardic (whatever the hell this is) and finnish. Two voices singing in totally harmony and it fits very well. The mood, the performance and the non existing light conditions... Only the announcements inbetween rather sound like uncle Erny, like we say so.
The setlist leaves no requests open for all these faun Fans.

For the finale, Olli announces the probably last song... which it is, followed by two encores - 'Wind & Geige' and 'Ne Aludj El'. The amen is - 'RAd'.

Alrighty, though the magic here is not nessessarely my cup of tea, but I have to say, it's got something about it, a rather unusual entertaining aspect. The noisy reaction of the audiance talks for itselves. And I for  my part learned something new in my 25 years of musicbiz. - It's the definition - Pagan Folk.
