... and there we go again with a rebel yell in the truest sense of the word - our eternal youthfull english genteman Sir William Michael Albert Broad from New York City. Yeah well, he didn't receive the "Sir" yet from the Queen for possible input in the music history. But somehow he would deserve it, and if it was just for the attitude. Okay, since last time he he doesn't show much creativity since his last output 'Devil's Playground' from 2005, does he? Most artists build a bridge over such an empty time with an Livealbum or Best of.... In Billy's Case it's the CD ‘The Very Best Of Billy Idol: Idolize Yourself’. Dun' know, whether this piece was neccessary, even despite 2 new tracks entitled 'John Wayne' and 'New Future Weapon' and a bonus DVD. But as we all know, every Die Hard Idol fan will buy this article as well. Billy is 53 years young now, and yes his body is still in shape, showing everybody that he's winning the goal. His macho attitude and classic rebell face is still frightening every mother in law. In each case, after now 3 years the venue is sold out here in Munich at the Tollwood festival. And this means more than 5.000 fans and a few more, who don't mind the nonstop rain to come here and get rocked. Another surprise is the fact, that many musiclovers have not come for Billy in first place, but for is longtime standard guitarist Steve Stevens, who enjoys an almost holy reputation as a 6 string acrobat. Yes, you could say, that at some point during a live show he is the centerfold of attraction. But first of all, it's young german rockband El*Ke, who spread their punk over all the kiddies here. El*ke that is Peter
Bolmer (voc/git), Muecke Kruessel (Bass) and Hubert Deters (Drums).
They were founded in 2003 in Harem in the Emsland county in Germany.
Meanwhile they have moved to Berlin. Their cataloge includes 2 albums so
far, whereby the newest piece 'Haeuser Stuerzen Ein' just came out. And so
the Billy Idol supportslot just came right to promote this CD and get more
known to a wider audiance. They get receives with mixed feelings here in
Munich tonight. And it seems like: either you like them, or you don't like
them, there is no inbetween. I for my part think, that this band rocks
pretty well, but they should be sent on a clubtour, so they can show more
of their average potential. - But over all the first impression ain't that
bad, is it?! To repeat myself from my
last review... Billy Idol is not only cult but also a style icon, who made
punkmusic commercial. Yeah it's quite a while ago now, and nowadays it's
more or less the shade following him exspecially in Europe. But there are also some other diamonds in Billy Idols band... We know the name Derek Sherinan from his
time as keyboarder with Dream Theater. And he has put out quite a few
solorecords out as well in the past. By the way, the next one he plans for
next year, when every duty with Billy is done. Brian Tichy sits behind the
drumkit and also takes the guitar towards the end of the show, as well as
Sherinan. The bass is till handled by Stephan mcGrath. Nothing really happens without calculation, but still the show puts out some kind of spontanity. Let's describe it this way.... Billy Idol doesn't offer us nothing new, but a Best of menue made with his biggest hits from the eighties (see setlist) But these almost oldies are still rocking the walls down in here. Yes, maybe the true talents of Steve Stevens don't get noticed that much, as well as the one's of Derek Sherinan, who usually moves on a Dreamtheater level. But I presume, we don't want that anyway tonight.....
