.... and when
you him up there on stage, you think in the first moment, this is the one
and only John Lee Hooker himself. Truly his junior looks like him. And we
ask ourselves, whether the son continues the legend of his dad the
fascinating bluesman. Does he live on in his son? No I doubt it! Because
you can make out immidiately, that JL jun. rather goes for Chicago Detroit
Blues and Jazz and not the traditional Mississippi Delta Blues. Although
he names his father as his biggest influence and idol next to B.B. and
Albert King, Big Mama Thornton and Jimi Hendrix. Because of his dad, John Lee jun. got at a very early age in contact with music. He accompanied his dad often at shows and interviews and even played live with him. But the real big success never came to him. First in 2004, three years after the death of John Lee Hooker sen. the meanwhile 52 year old son, released his debut CD 'Blues With A Vengeance'. And this one went really well. He received a grammy for_ Best tradit.blues album one year later. The Cd includes next to eight self penned songs also a version of T-Bone Walkers Stormy Monday, and three coverversions of well known hits of his dad. But junior tried to give those his own individual note.
His set goes in two
parts with a short break inbetween. JL starts with full energy and moves
on stage, as if he had never done anything else in his life but that,
Compared to his dad's heavy, slow and sometimes melancholic blues, Juniors
music is faster, happy, very funky and with some jazz influences. He
doesn't stand still for one second, and I have my problems to get some
good photos at this rather poor light conditions here. Yeah well it's a
nightclub, ain't it?! |
