It
took 23 years for Mr. Stevie Wonder to find his way back to Europe and
Germany,- and .... the Olympiahalle ain't even half full. Sad but true. I
can only think of some reasons, like for instance, that there are
currently up to 5 big concerts after each other in this town. And
ticketprices are set above 70,-- Euros. At Mr. Wonder's show they are even
up to 140.--. Other people rather prefererred the current Octoberfest. And
thanks to the seated arena, it's even less audiance. I would guess, the
number is around 5.000 people, including all those countless V.I.P.'s, who
of course get in for free. And when you take a closer look at the audiance,
who are really dressed up tonight, so it's a little different society, who
are most of them above their fifties. Those are guys, who have known
Stevie Wonder already in the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. It all started out in 1963, when Little Stevie, just 11 years young, brought his first single 'Fingerprints' out and had straight a No. 1 Hit. About the following decades I don't need to say much more I presume. Because not just Soulfans know his big hits, no matter, whether they meet the individual taste of not. Just to name a few, there is: For Once In My Life" from 1968, hitting no 2 in the charts, or 'Superstition' a no.1 single. In 1973 came "You Are the Sunshine of My Life" and 1977 ‚Sir Duke’, - again both hitting no.1. And also in the Eighties, songs like 'I Just Called To Say I Love You' and 'Parttime Lover' became big hits. In the ninties it became pretty quiet around the blind superstar and he took a rest for quite some years. the result is, that this
break didn't do him any harm. And he is back again with a vengance as good
as always, as good as on his personally peak and about 50 pounds heavier
in body weight. Nowadays Stevie Wonder rather seems like a gospel prayer
from the late thirties deep down in Louisiana. There is noSupportact.
– And the 2 ˝ hours lasting Intermezzo starts out with an Instrumental Tribut
to Miles Davis in Form of ‚All Blues’. The Meistro of Soul
In the last part of
the show, one hit follows after the other (see setlist above). Only 'Happy
Birthday is missing'. Therefore we get the soapy 'I Just Called To Say I
Love You', and every elderly lady wipes secretly a little teardrop out of
her eyes. In the end Stevie leaves an absolute enthusiastic audiance, and
he can't resist doing a bit US political propaganda, guess for whom? And
he asks the fans to sing along at 'We Can Change The World'. - It's a
wonderful dejavu, and Stevie Wonder kept all hopes . I personally also
think, it has been a great show and performance, apart from a little
hesitation in the middle of the set. That probably comes from playing to
many ballads after each other. But the following hit explosion made good
for it. |
