Let's be honest... Until recently the name Kid Rock was only a side shelf figure in the international musicbusiness over here in Europe, despite the fact, that this musician continously released CDs since 1990. Meanwhile Robert James Ritchie has put out 11 CDs, but they only ranged in the middle field of the charts. First in 1998, the meanwhile 37 year old boy had a smaller hit with 'Cowboy'. He got famous when he married actress Pamela Anderson, though the relationship only lasted for 5 months, but got him a long lasting echo. Well and then Kid Rock puts out one huge hit with 'All Summer Long' and shoots to no. 1 in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and England. . Only in his home country USA he scored just about pos 23. Whereby this song wasn't even thought to be a single as this is not a Kid Rock original, but a mixture of Lynyrd Skynyrds 'Sweet Home Alabama' and Warren Zevons 'Werwolves Of London'. But this recepie went so well down, that the label decided to release it as a single. The coninciding album 'Rock'n'Roll Jesus took a profit of the song as well. Alright, last time Kid rock played the much smaller Tonhalle here in Munich, this time it's the Zenith, which is well filled with about 4.500 fans. And they all have come because of this one song, which has also been the Oktoberfest No. 1 Hit. - So let's hope, the kids here also like the rest of the performance, as Kid Rocks music is usually a mixture of Hip Hop, Rap and Rock, whereby the Hip Hop comes first. The ouverture comes from canadian rockers Finger Eleven, a fivesome who have started out in 1994 and have released 5 albums so far. They are going for
alternative rock with deep sense lyrics and rather melancholic melodies,
but also with a certain aggression. Frontman Scott Anderson reminds me a
lot of Joe Cocker, at least what's up to his body movements on stage. Eyes
are mostly closes and his arms have become independendly to underline his
vocal demonstrations. To be honest, Finger Eleven are received with
mixed feelings by all those Kid Rock fans, as the musical style is oceans
away from the headliner one's. But who care's. This lot here has surely
got a certain entertainment aspect. And who knows, maybe they are the next
superstars and heirs of Nirvana and Co. And what shall I say...? He can do whatever he wants up there, no matter - it's Kid Rock, and only this counts. He's also got a genius background band, where every member seems to be a multitalent including himself. So Kid Rock plays almost every instrument during the set, and at one point, you ask yourself: is there anything this man can' t put up with?! It's already the fifth song, which is his mega hit 'All Summer Long', stretched out in a 10 minutes version including some statement of Kid, that everybody up here is playing and singing live. Maybe this should be a little hint to some other artist, who toured Germany recently and caused sort of a scandal because of some playback rumours. (see Review 287) But it is clearly obvious, that this band here is indeed playing live.
It is the slight loveable
prolo touch, which makes Kid Rock rather loveable, this next door's
ordinary boy image, However, this is pure
pleasure, Rock'n'Roll, how it should be played, including Cowboy and a
neat hat. And a Kid Rock concert is just a huge party. |
