Arighty
who would ever thought that... Our german No.1 Hardrock guitarist is
going to be 50 years old next year. He mourns about his (invisible)
belly and one or two wrinkles in his face, and the fact, that he can't
take that much anymore (whatsoever) like when he was young. Yeah well,
as long as he complains about these things only in his dressingroom in
front of an insider like me, it shouldn't do any matter. Because on the
surface in public you won't realize any of those things. No, in fact, it
rather seems, as if time has stood still. Because as often I've seen
Mr.Pell over the years, he never changed a wink. And it's not just the
look, but also the aura, the physical movement and the technical system
he plays his guitar, a bit like Ritchie Blackmore, ain't it.....?! And
whenever the Wizard of the six strings is calling for another action, it
is indeed all those freaks and fans, who already attended the show last
time, the time before and 15 years ago. The rest of the audiance are
young kids, who are just about to explore the Pell style for themselves. And counting about 800 souls in our Backstage Werk, this is pretty well filled. Starting off the evening is Melodic Rockers 'Mad Max', or better the band of german multi musician Michael Voss. Because Mad Max is
actually Michael Voss, and Michael Voss is Mad Max. The rest of the
band... well, you need them to tranlate the whole thing onto stage. You've gotta give Mr.Voss one thing. He is a brilliant musician, no doubt about that. But.... this is no excuse for the fact, that in the beginning of the set, I miss some vibe, soul or simple chilli in the ass. Musically he got stuck somewhere in the Eighties, I'd say between 1985 and 1988. But don't you worry, as Voss has spilled out his roots with his various projects right at this time
And the hat suits
him very well, doesn't it. Whereby Pell's big
advantage, despite his talents, is the voice of Johnny Gioeli, which
doesn't sound german at all. (Exept he says - Scheisse:-)))) No surprise
though, as this wonderkind is originally from Brooklyn Ney York and he
seems like a 25 year young little sod, with his short and proper haircut,
which he exchanged some years ago with a very long hairstyle. And he is
42 right now. But that's not all, because he's pretty cheek, and it's
suits him. I mean, as long a he twitters as Enrico Caruso at his best
times, everything else should be apologized. Apart from Johnny Boy, there is still bassist Volker Krawczak, who is the only original member apart from Axel himself. To the left (seen from the audiance) Ferdy Doernber is kissing his Keyboard and he proves, that a bold head fitts into the Heavy Metal chlichee as well and can be quite sexy :-))) Last but not, Hulk Hogan, better known as Mike, - the Animal - Terrana take care for the right beat behind his drumkit and he keeps the motor running with the right drive. And of course not to be forgotten, the meistros great individual guitar stund, which very obvious but on the other hand pretty laid back. Well let's put it that way, Pell is not Malmsteen, if you know what I mean. And that okay. Axel rather goes for a posh understatement and only steps in front, when a certain solo needs more attention. The 'Tales Of A Crown' get told with devotion and passion, but they do also perform 'Mystica' and other classic tunes (check the setlist for the 15 chapters of today's show catalogue). And not to forget the usual acoustic bit in the middle, which meets the golden centerfold, - not too long and not too short. This refers also to Axels guitar solos.
So the whole magic
soon develops into a colourful Rock'n'Roll Show, which is well worth
international standard. But even in this case, the true fact is, that
the traditional Hard Rock and Heavy Metal is only a small centograde
within the genre, exept the so called cult bands and musicians who wrote
music history.
