Almost everybody in the indie scene has heard about this name, but many do not really know about this man. Phillip Boa, who's real name is Ernst Ulrich Figgen, is 44 years of age. And since 1984 he has released 17 albums. And in addition there are 13 samplers, Live and Re-Releases. - His band is Voodooclub....
With the Voodoocult Phillip Boa founded once a Heavy Metal Bands, concisting of Dave Lombardo on drums, Chuck Schudiner on guitar, Waldemar Sorychta - guitar, Mille Petrozza on guitar and himself on vocals. This band released one album 'Jesus Killing Machine' in 1994. One year later this band released another album but with a different line up. After that, the group splits. 

Meanwhile Boa lives on Malat and only comes back for various tour activities. In independend circles he is a superstar already, but in the international business he is still an insider tipp. Whereby even in his home country Germany there is a strong difference. While in Berlin and up north Boa easily gets 1.000 and more people at his concerts, in the south he only get's a couple of hundrets, These fans do already belong to the older generation and know this artist from the Eighties. 

However, the current Voodooclub consists apart of Phillip Boa, of Pia Lund (Voc), David Rebel (git), Maik T. a.k.a. The Leach (Bass), Moses Pellberg (drums) and Toett (Keyb./Percussion). But apart from Boa and female singer Lund, everybody else vanishes in the fog up there on stage and doesn't get really noticed. The frontman himself is quite a personality, tall, individual,excentric and demanding. 
No need for a supportact, Boa starts his set at 8.30  p.m. and keeps playing 'till after 10 p.m. A big sign to both sides of the stage tells the audiance, not to use any flashlights with their smal pocketcams or mobile cams. 

Therefore we photographers get tortured by the fog and the non existent light during the first 3 songs. It's hard to get some decent pictures. At least there is only one person up there on stage, who is interesting for pics and not the whole package. Boa shows himself sophisticated, He not only sings his songs, he lives them with expressive body language. The music is a mixture of pop, Rock, Trance, Dub Reggae and Dancefloor, perfectly mixed with a very individuell touch. Pia Lund, Boa's former fiancee' does a lot of the singing, partly even alone on stage with tracks like "Atlantic Claire" und "And Then She Kissed Her". The focus is of course put on the new CD 'Diamond Falls'. But also Boas hits from the past get well down. It's  "Diana" and "Albert is a Headbanger" or the brilliant Container Love'. 
One thing is for sure, Phillip Boa is a musical loner, and he doesn't care, whether he is successful with his music or not. For more than 20 years now, he's an institution in the europen independend scene. 
The final song is of course "Kill your Ideals". And everyone in the audiance sings and rocks along like in old college times. No we obviously cant complain. This here is real good music with neat melodies, individually performed with a special vibe. But on the whole here is everything up to everybody's individual taste....
