Well, I think, I have described this man already in my Live Review from  2007. That's why I will spare out on details this time. Actually I did plan to go to the show in Munich, one day after this one here. But because of logistic reasons, I can't make tomorrow, so I've gotta take this gig tonight in Augsburg. Let's put it that way, thanks god, Russ is actually playing Augsburg, otherwise I would not see him at all. But these 45 minutes drive from Munich to Augsburg ain't no world journey, so I take the chance. At this point I wanna thank ASS Promotion in Hamburg and the nice lady from the Spectrum Club in Augsburg for their help

I do know Russ Ballard now for over 20 years, and I do like him very much as a person and as a musician, so this is the main reason I take these circumstances, not so much, because I'll be doing a review and some pics for one magazine, which I do anyway.... This all just mentioned besides everything else.

You all know Russ Ballard, conciously or unconciously. I only say: 'God Gave Rock'n'Roll To You', which shot to fame by a cover version played by Kiss. And I could name you dozens of other examples, songs of Rainbow, Santana, Hot Chocolate etc, which have all  been written bei Russ Ballard. So to underline this next sentence 3 times and in red, Russ is in first place a brilliant songwriter, probably one of the best, Rock'n'Roll has to offer us. I've seen him live on a stage 4 times so far over all these years. And every time I've got the impression his selfconfidence  in performing live, which he might have lost over some years in the past, is getting back stronger and stronger each time. However, the old fire and sparkle has caught up again with him, this fire he used to own in the Sixties and early Seventies.

But first of all, - it is sooooo hot in here, in Augsburg's No. 1 Rockclub. So you receive a sauna for free as well, which might  be due to the outside temperature, yeah well partly, but also due to a lack of aircondition, which might be caused by purpose, so the bar keeps busy nonstop due to a higher request on liquids. And with about 200 guests, the place looks at least well filled.
I'm a little late, I have to confess, as I had to do a photosession in Munich before. But there is still more than over one hour left to check this gig out
By the way, I never ever let myself getting influenced by things like beeing good friends with someone or beeing a mega fan of anybody. I have always been able to judge in a neutral way, also music which don't meet my taste, and I still can say whether it's good or bad. It ain't easy, I know. I'm not like those Die Hard fans of a band, who are still enthusiastic and fanatic, though the band is playing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' up there... You know what I mean? I always try to find out the right way, what's good or bad...- no matter who it is....

The song which makes the opener tonight, belongs to one of my earliest memories according to this man. 'Rene (Didn't Do It') is the song, and it can be found on Russ Ballard's album 'Barnet Dogs' from 1978. And it was actually that year, when I bought the record back in Innsbruck, my  hometown. It was a pure coincident. Because at that time I was a huge fan of Roger Daltrey (The Who) and I collected every soloalbum of him.
And I got aware of the name Russ Ballard, as it was written underneath many of Daltrey's songs in the credits. So when I actually discovered 'Barnet Dogs' I bought it without hesitating or even listening to it. I just knew it would be great. And from that point onwards I collected all Ballard albums I could find. - Within my 5 years in London, England, I always watched out, if this man was gonna play anywhere or whatsoever, but no luck. That was at a time, when Russ didn't tour at all. First in 1990 at a Magnum concert at Wembley arena at the aftershow Party, I met him for the first time. And from that point we never lost contact. Thank you for that Russel.

Like I mentioned before, his selfconfidence at playing live has returned completely over the years, but he's far from beeing perfect up there. He's trying some guitar solos, which ain't always a 100% clear and the band doesn't always go conform exactly. But who cares. There is so much fun of playing here, which on the other hand suffers a bit because of the heat.
There's a new guy in the band, who is bassist Bob Skeat, who some of you might know from Wishbone Ash. Apart from that, it's the same gang again - Bob Henrit who is a friend of Russ since 1959, still handles the drums, Steve Smith on Keyboard and Chris Winter on the 2. guitar, Keyb. and Sax.

Tonight's set is an almost complete acoustic dejavu experience. Russ reminds us on old Argent days and the band's biggest hit - 'Hold Your Head Up'. And although some of you out there might not know Argent. But you most probably know this melody.  Within an medley (see clip below) Russ brings back many songs, he wrote for other people, who had a hitsingle with it.

This medley is followed by another track from 'Barnet Dogs' which is 'On The Rebound'. And the the next song 'Voices' Russ had probably his most successful solohit. With the next one -  ‚God Gave Rock’n’Roll To You’, he had the most successful song performed by another artist, which was Kiss. And there is 'Since You've Been Gone', which is mostly known in the Rainbow Version.

So what? There ain't much more to say... again - it's not that perfect in it's performance, but on the other hand it's got so much soul and heart. And thanks to all these great songs, written by this talented man, we are celebrating here a sentimental nostalgic party with  some fire still burning. And everybody in here likes it. So what else do you want??

Well, before I forget, there is actually one personal thing I want to criticice. Like last time, and now again, I miss my personal favorite song of Russ Ballard, and this one starts witth he words: She came in the night, in a raging storm, the wind called her name, and it rained till the dawn. The men from the town the gathered round, does anybody know where that girl was found……”
One day, you've gotta play that one, and if it's just for me....
