I
have to confess, when I heard the song 'Bad Girlfriend' for the
very first time, I was flattered. What a great song!! And I
didn't even know the band 'till this moment. Whereby that track
is already from the canadian band's third and most successful
album 'Scars & Souvenirs'. Halleluja and shame on me.
Because as a music journalist I should have known this outfit
already, as they are going for 7 years now. For my excuse I
should mention that Theory Of A Dead Man broke through on the
international market with this 3rd CD. Yeah and well the support
job on the Mötley Crew US-tour wasN't exactly a disadvantage,
was it?!
In each case, they have made the next step now to conquer the
rest of the world, whether it's in a festival package with other
famous artists or like tonight here in Munich with a small
headliner clubshow. One thing is soon to recognize, by entering
the kiddies room, - which is actually true in the sense of the
word, as most of the audiance could be easily my kids. To
be honest, what's up to the visual aspect, the band seems almost
like one of these boybands playing their instruments themselves
and not dancing. But the rather hard rhythm speaks for itselves.
So let's wait and see, what's coming up soon....
The support comes from Sweden and listens to the name Takida.

holy
shit, or should I rather say - dear Lapland elk... These Boys
are truly youngsters in every way. But when reading their
biography, you discover soon, that this band is already going
for 10 years... So I ask myself, what age did they actually
start. - I really don't wanna know. In each case they reached
already some fame in their home country, most of all with their
second album 'Bury The Lies' and the single 'Curly Sue' which
stayed even in the swedish charts for some weeks.
Takida have grown up meanwhile and climbed out of the nest, to
fly over to the continent. Their third album 'The Darker
Instinct' has just come out. And by the way, 'Bury The Lies' now
got re released here in Germany on Oct. 2 - 5 days ago. The band
has adopted their name form the figure Gohei Takeda from the
japanese Anime series Nagareboshi Gin. The Line up reads:
Robert
Pettersson (Voc), Tomas Wallin (Git.), Mattias Larsson (Git.),
Fredrik Pålsson (Bass), Kristoffer Söderström (Drums).

Musically
Takida tend to Melodic Rock genre. But let's put it that way:
for Hard Rock it's almost a bit soft. But for Softrock it's on
the other hand to hard, spiced with a slight alternative touch.
The Swedes honestly try to give their best, showing a lot of
enthusiasm. What is definately still missing is a little more
experience and routine. But... they are still soooooooo young
and have endless time to devolope. Just be careful, that the
train doesn't leave without you boys one day, as the world of
Musicbiz is a very fast living one... And without constant new
innovation it could stop suddenly at a certain point. |

Like always here at the 59:1 club showtimes
are set rather late at 10.30 p.m. And that's when the magic starts.....
And
I presume, I don't have to mention, that the first row behind
the barriere of this mini stage consists mainly of young girlies
in all shades and colours - oldest age aprox. 18 -20 holding
their head's up and also their breasts, sending their demanding
eyeglimpsen in stage direction.
Theory Of A Dead Man are a little older than their collegues
from the support act, and they show a hell of a selfconfidence -
a little too much for my taste, - most of all frontman Tyler
Connolly. This guy reminds me a lot of a mixture between James
Dean meets Elvis and Joe Strummer of the Clash, including the
hairstyle and the cool look. And he is of course the focus of
the band up there.
Despite all this arrogance up there, these guys seem to
have no eye for the beauties down there, who are seeking
desperately the eye contact with their faves.
So, what else shall I say. Like mentioned before, I honestly do
like the energetic music of Theory Of A Dead Man very much. And
therefore my expectation have been rather on a high level what's
up to this live performance here. But that one again doesn't
meet my expectation a hundred percent. I miss somehow the chilly
on stage, which is included in the music
|
Maybe
because it's up to the fact, that Tyler Connolly is not only the
singer, but plays also the guitar. And such a thing takes a lot
of the physical energy within a performance. Exspecially when
it's a faster Rock'n'Roll like the one of this band. And that's
why the reaction of the audiance is also rather low. Only once
the band asks the audiance to really cheer up. That again get
caught with a camcorder from up on stage. Back home in Canada it
will show then how great the german audiance was. Okay, okay, I
don't wanna be too strict and narrowminded now. Another reason
for the missing drive may be this tiny stage and
restriction to move around, maybe a bad day or the slight lack
of sound, who knows?!
The
centerpoint of the setlist is based on the new album 'Scars
& Souvenirs' of course, whereby songs like 'Got It Made'
lift up the average mood at least a little bit. 75 minutes show
time ain't that long, is it, and it closes down with the two
most well known and successful songs - 'Hate My Life' and last
but not least and also my personal favorite track - 'Bad
Girlfriend'.
In the end it's bassist Dean Back who gets the kiddies a little
out of their lethargy.
My fazit in the end: it hasn't been bad, but to repeat
myself, it has not met quite my expectations which I had because
of the excellent
CD. But like we use to say so: everybody has got another chance
to show, what he or she can manage. So let's wait and drink
tea...yeah well maybe some brandy or so... and I'll be there,
when Theory Of A Dead Man will be back next time.
But in any case, I can only advise you to have a listen to the
CD ‚Scars & Souvenirs’
