I really wanna know, which intellegent head has created to expression Viking Metal. Because that one is as stupid as the word - True Metal. No, it's even more abstract, as it is used mainly on finnish bands. And the finnish people are known to have been the biggest enemies of the Vikings, when they went out to conquer the world before the year 1066.
Jesus wept, I for my part will definately avoid to use this expression and rather go for the stylistic of folk metal. Folk because there are some ancient melodies used, backpipes and other exotic instruments, scandinavian languages or the - sometimes extraordinary costumes, which reminds only from a distance on the viking culture or whatsoever. Never mind, in the end it is all pretty photogenic. And that's not necessarely a disadvantage, is it.

Ensiferum is latin and means as much as carrying the sword. And that's what our finnish antique modern warriour are named, who are gonna make us happy  with the folk-metal melodies tonight. They are accompanied by two further groups, one is from Estland as well and is going into the same direction, the other comes from also from Finland and rather prefers a straight Death Metal line.
At our Backstage Werk there have aprox. 700 - 800 fans of the nordic music cultures gathered. And now and then you even see a horned helmet and a antique fur jacket running around. Well, must be fun within this sticky location here, ain't it?! But the true fan stays cool and  just goes for it. Only the hard are gonna win - so everything's no problem.

We are starting with  Tracedawn, who come also from Finland, like I mentioned before.

My first thought when I look at them: Christ, these are children, and none of them seems older then about 21, if even that. One thing is for sure, the next generation of scandinavian Heavy Metal is definately secured. And these boys are really standing up for it, beating the hell outta the stage floor. I have to confess, despite their young age, they show a hell of a professionallity. Also the posing is well done and my camera jumps up of joy. The lightconditions are rather poor, and are trown onto the band from the back. But because I hate to use flashlight for taking pics, I avoid the photopit and rather try to get some decent shots from a little further away in the audiance. A very wise decision which turns out a little later.

Okay, back to this band, who are going now for 4 years. It's  Antti Lappalainen (Voc), Tuomas Yli-Jaskari (Git), Roni Seppänen (Git), Perttu Kurttila (Drums), Vili Itäpelto (Keyb.) and Pekko Heikkilä (Bass). So as you can see by reading their names, these is a pure finnish group. And those have put out 2 albums so far. Their musical direction moves a little away from the two other participants tonight, going for a straight deathmetal line with some melodic touch. Very interesting the whole show, and brilliant played. Respect boys! It seems, as if these kids have been born with their instruments. And when they carry on like that, then they will definately establish themselves  in great way. Tracedawn leave a very good impression, but unfortunately their set is miles too short, which is the fate of an opener...

The second stint comes from  Metsatöll, and.....they come from the country of Estland.

Well, and now it gets really into the subject of folk. I can't describe it any other way. But here the look is right, the estnic lyrics, which are clashed onto our heads. Whereby I bet, nobody in here, does understand a single word, but who cares. This band started off 11 years ago with a result of 7 albums so far. By the way, the curious band name stands for another pseudonym for wolf. And this animal is included again and again in the band's songs,,which are telling stories mainly of the independend wars in the 13. and 14. century.
Metsatöll include old estnic runen vocals and traditional melodies in their metal music. And they show a lot of enthusiasm while playing. I personally find the performance of „Varulven“ Õunapuu quite impressing, as he doesn't just play guitar but also flute, an estnic backpipe named Torupill and to so called Kannel. All these exotic instruments are handeld by Lauri with much passion. He moves along with it, stepping over to the audiance across the pit several times. And the fans would luv to pull him down towards them, exspecially what's up to the girls. Metsatöll take their nordic folk very seriously. And the unique vocals combined with Death Metal actually do remind on a distanced wolfs howling. Yeah well, you've gotta get used to this. But with some feeling and understanding for details and beeing open with any kind of music, this performance of Metsatöll is in fact rather interesting.

They carry just imaginary swords, but nevertheless, Ensiferum go for a very progressive style last but not least

But I have to say, their neat chanel make up, rather reminds me at indians on their war path, then at nordic warriors. Only the skirts seem a little interesting and let's us ask the questions: what is beneath those one's :-))))
Okay, leave it,- it does belong to the story, but is not the point for a good or bad performance. By the way, this is the second time, that I see the fins playing live on stage. And fortunately the lights are much better now, and it is really fun now to catch images of them on my SD card. I mean, they ain't necessarely unattractive, are they, despite their body paintings?!

In this band it's only guitarist Markus toivonen, who is left from the original line up. It's also him, beeing the main songwriter. Bassist Sami Hinkka is responsible for most of the lyrics, and he repeats saying, that these are no viking stories, but rather invented stories and personal emotions in words and songs. Samis is definately a focus on stage. Because he moves his not too skinny body in a funny way across the stage, so every little inch of his belly moves to the rhythm :-)))

But who cares agian. Most important is the fact, that up there is a lot fun to play, although singer Petri Lindroos most times shows a very serious face. But I presume, that belongs to kind of a image care.

Over all, the show of Ensiferum goes down very well at their fans. And I have to confess, these finnish band has got a lot of musical, but also entertaining potential. It doesn't get boring for a single minute. And it has been worth while to have come here to check them out again. I guess, Ensiferum have still got countless intentions what's up to international success and conquering all fans of folk metal.
So let's go for victory. Long live Ensiferum and the finnish nostalgic for the midsummernight.
