There is
something curious about this rather new band here. On one side, they are
not known at all at the wider music society, but on the other hand they
are handled as the new supergroup within certain fancircle. I'm talking
about Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age), David Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana)
and
Led Zeppelin Legend John Paul Jones, who could easily be the other two's
dad. - Legend??!!! No, not really, when you know Mr. Jones
personally. This nice man, who don't care, staying at a rather simple
little hotel, meeting up in a small coffee shop in Munich's gay quarter.
- though he wouldn't need to do so. I must admit, it was nice though and
I remember it very well - thank you. Apart from that, he still holds the
strings of Led Zeppelin in his hands what's up to the rights of the name.
But again, this is useless, when one or the other doesn't want this or
wants that or not at all...
But we don't wanna do nothing, do we?! So let's take part at the
generation clash - Result: it is the name and the reputation of each
band member letting Them Crooked Vultures shoot to the Orbit like a
spaceshuttle with 1.000 miles an hour. .
And now they have landed in Germany with a lot of smoke and sound. 5.000
fans have attended the show at our Zenith. And this ain't bad at all for
a band, which exists just about for not even one year yet. - And most of
these people are not even 25 years of age yet, - all born, when Led
Zeppelin had already quit for a few years.

First of all
it's Sweethead coming on stage, the sideproject of Queens Of The Stone
Age guitarrist Troy Van Leeuwen.
Hang on...stop.. haven't
I just seen them here in Munich??? Yes of course... they were supporting
the Eagles of Death Metal in October at the Muffathalle. But I missed
them then, thanks to EODM singer Jesse Hughes who kept me
occuppied :-))) Mind me, I didn't regret it....
This time I have enough time to check Sweethead out, and I have to say,
I'm a bit disappointed. Jes... what is this? A pretty blonde Poison
doing the frontwomen job. And she doesn't make an early spring, as we
say so, by singing like a nitingale. And so all these exhaltating guitar
soli don't help to impress the audiance, who actually only waiting for
Homme, Grohl and Jones....
So, this band
doesn't leave much impression on me and also not on the fans with their
alternative rock. I don't wanna say much more and leave it up to you out
there to decide, whether you like their music or not...
http://www.sweethead.net/
And then something is happening, which makes me
nicely shiver....
Them Crooked Vultures
seem not so spectacular what's up to their visual appearance, and they
start their turn getting all these young fans immidiately in some great
enthusiasm. whereby you might think, they are here because of Dave Grohl/FooFighters
or Josh Home/Queens of The Stone Age... But no, it's not... 5.000 voices
start yelling: "John Paul Jones" - "John Paul
Jones" - "John Paul Jones"... etc etc... And Led Zeppelin
T-Shirts whereever you look around... It's wonderful to watch these
young kids, who get almost mad because of this small elderly man up
there, who usually prefers to stand rather in the back.
By the way, before I forget... the threesomes is accompanied by a fourth
musician, who is Ex-Queens Of The Stone Age guitarist Alain Johannes . -
But it is without doubt - John Paul Jones who is the hero here tonight,
though frontman Josh Homme is surely not vanishing up there in his
appearance.

Live they are working
themselves throughout the new selftitled album, which just came
out. Well, I have to confess the music is some kind of - you
have to get used to and includes many influences. In addition take Josh
Homme's voice, then you tend to think for a moment it's a retart baby of
QOTSA. But it's not, thanks to the animalic input of Dave Grohl who
takes the world out of it's angles with his drum beat. and the brilliant
bass performance of John Paul Jones.
No, it's definately not
bad, what these 3 guys are performing up there, just a little strange
and - unfortunately much to loud. Well that not their fault but rather
up to the sound technician. The mood is getting better and better and
more crazy with every minute. And they won't stop shouting: "John
Paul Jones".... - "John Paul Jones".... I guess, Josh and
Dave have given in at one point... ;.))))
Our helpful and busy
security has got a lot do do to keep the enthusiasm a little down
to earth from time to time. But at some point, Josh Homme says inbetween
2 songs: "I see you've got a real good security here in Munihc.
They are doing a great job. But hey, we are here at a Rock'n'Roll show
and not a fuckin' church service, so please leave these kids alone...
Yeah well, from that second, our security has been literatually workless.
Another highlight is the
keyboard solo of John Paul Jones. Jesus wept, this man can do what he
wants up there, and he gets carried to heaven from the audiance here.
There is not much more to
say. the magic lasts for about 85 minutes and ends with the song 'Warsaw'
and off we go - without encore - no extras or anything else...
doesn't need to anyway... because up there, there was John Paul Jones...
yeah well and not to forget - Dave Grohl and Josh Homme.
The only question left, whether there will be a second chapter of Them
Crooked Vultures. Or is this yet another short time project, which is
created as a little change for 3 so different characters to fill up
their resources with fresh energy. That's it so far... yes maybe....
what about - 'Long Live Led Zeppelin' Or is there anybody out there who
wants to protest...
