... and this
a little different as we used to know 'em.... actually it reminds me strongly about one mate, who told me about 2 years ago, that he doesn't see himself dancing across the stage in this ancient costume in some years from now on. Well, somehow this wish has now come true, although not quite as in the sense he meant it back then. . But that one hopefully is waiting for a little longer.. (don't worry, the croation coast landscape doesn't swim away for the next 5.000 years or so) and meanwhile we enjoy In Extremo in a posh twenties Prêt-à-porter (not Haute Coutur, which would be a bit too much) And this time we don't have a ancient candle atmosphere, but rather a comfortable Al Capone living room inviting us for a sophisticated middleage Tete' a Tete'. No don't worry, the musical extemities have stayed the same. Those and their performers are just wrapped up in some sort of exotic vibe. As known, contrasts are usually drawn to each other, the more they do, the more they are interesting. Apparently the idea to combine this ancient instrumental show with the glory twenties came from Flex, who listens to the name Marco Ernst-Felix Zorzytzky in normal life, and who took this idea in the past to celebrate the most beautiful day in his life... That's what I've been told.... However, I find the idea
pretty amusing, probably because of the fact, that many admirers of the
glory seven do rather develop strange feeling towards this sight and
there is this question: so what is this? What and where is the sense for
this mixture of middleage meets 20s art and culture? Let's put it that
way: King lionsheart would have felt as strange about twenties fashion
style, as Bonnie and Clyde would have done with all these exotic old
instruments, or even a Hawaii Shirt at the times of Columbus the seaman,
with whom the middle age had ended. But that's probably the point - the
more controverse, the more interesting, as I mentioned before, so why
not. So don't think too much about it. - Though I've got to say, that
the choreography has indeed got this special little something, which
doesn't neccessarely have got anything to do with a hidden sexappeal or
something like it. |
Our seven toy
boys up there look pretty handsome with ties, and neat shirts, and also
the extraterrestically performance goes down well whether its the
prologue 'Merseburger' , or 'Spielmann' and 'Singapur', just to name a
view. In fact all these well known tunes get almost a new identity
because of how they are performed. And from time to time I hear even
some Jazz and Blues influences. Valentino a.k.a. Michael Rhein, placed on this oldfashioned couch, spreads his clever philosophies within the short breaks between the songs with a charming aura and some hidden irony. And he himself seems to look forward for some beer and cigarettes most after the first 10 chapters (shown on the setliste below).
This tour trip is named 'Tranquilo' - Relax yourself' - and this seems to be unwritten law onstage but also off stage. The second part is ready to start. And what can I say? The break inbetween has not just been used for refreshment by the band, but also for a change in individual clothes. Whereby I'm not quite sure, whether I like better this baloon hat and the hiker boots, or rather the Gigolo hairstyle and the barefoot celebration. Yeah well, it's not my personal taste what counts here. And in the end it is the musical performance what counts most, doesn't it?! And this one starts off with another 9 chapters. By the way the whole party is directed rhythmwise by Herrn Otto and not Morgenstein, who's a little uncomfortable currently. Anyway, Herr Otto does pretty well for these circumstances, and a little thank you goes to the boss in the front who is helping a bit with hidden signs. However, the main topic of act one and two are the two albums 'Sängerkrieg' and 'Mein Rasend Herz'. Whereby the titletrack of the second named longplayer, which is the first encore here, is performed only by Mr.Rhein and his favorite guitarist Sebastian Lange. And that one again, owns the most innocent eyeglimpse you can possbily imagine. So caught by my photographical lense below. In
Extremo have got surely something from an exotic chamelion, undlining
this fact with a very interesting and curious version of AC/DC's 'It's A
Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock'n'Roll)although the lyrics don't
seem to completely in Micha's head. But don't worry, we all don't
get younger, and I don't think, many fans have realized this anyway. So
what? And I mean, where else do you get an AC/DC classic tune performed
by a backpipe. On the other hand my longings for backpipes are more than
satisfied again tonight for quite a while again. Yes I know, beat me
up... I never could stand this instrument really. But as a
musicjournalist you've gotta be neutral. And a backbpipe is also just
another instrument, which has it's right to be here. Apart from that I
was told, that this one is pretty hard to play. So everybody definately
deserves my respect who can put up with it, like Yellow Pfeiffer for
instance. 'Herr
Mannelig' and the order 'Küss Mich' (kiss me) are closing down a well
done rendevouz with a band who has shown here, that they are very
variable. So go and shoot the question - why and what's the point of
mixing up middle age and golden Twenties to the moon |
