Yeah well, it
does seem a little funny up there on stage, when 5 singer (4 guys, 1
girl) and a drummer start off in a very Heavy Metal way following the
whole chlichee', what the business has got to offer us. . On the other
side it's not quite correct, as this band does not play any other
instruments than the drums You call this a cappella performance. But it
ain't that strange, as we all know this from the past with bands like
the Housemartins, who've practiced this already 20 years ago, although
in a little different style.
Our choirboys and girl here have found each other in 2006, starting off
under the name Jester's Funeral'. shortly after they changed their name
into Van Canto. The word Canto is a latin word and means as much as I
can sing. The Van is only there for making it sound better, nothing else.
It's as easy as that.
Over the past 4 years including 3 albums, Van Canto have established
themselves in the german Heavy Metal scene, exspecially, as they are
practicing something rather unusal. And whoever thinks now, - just
singing is pretty easy, is terribly wrong. Because this here and for
instance Twinkle Twinkle Little Star have as much in common, as Freddy
Star and Cradle of Filth. But I get to more later...
Our Metropolis club is well filled, though not sold out. But respect,
not many bands get such a good audiance, as they do tonight. One of the
supportacts names Evil hedgehog are cancelled, don't ask me why. So the
slated the showtime for about 30 minutes later, which is exactly 9 p.m.
The second support is named In Legend(same as the movie) and is pretty
related to the headliner. Because this here is the sideproject of Van
Canto drumer Bastian 'Basti' Emig. Only playing drums in one band
doesn't make a whole summer he must have thought. So he started to
search for his other talents and soon found out, that his second love is
the piano. And within In Legend he truly can put out this love.
It turns out
that his instrument here is a real monster, which takes at least half of
the stage.....
Exept him, who is also
responsibe for the vocals, there is Daniel Wicke on Bass (Jesus wept
what a hair!!! and get rid of this beard, won't you) And drummer Dennis
Otto, who often is named the Drumming Tornado. Within this show, it is
indeed the piano driving the hard beat. The monster is dominating the
stage and is the focus of the action. It is actually not only used for
playing but also for climbing practice. Oh by the way, this band went
into the public eye for the first time now with their EP 'Pandemonium'.
And this is surely no mistake, as they get well received by the Van
Canto fans.
I personally do show
respect, if someone like Bastina Emig shows so many different talents
and also condition to play 2 shows after each other. Not bad at all,
what In Legend do show us. And I would not have mind, if their show
would have lasted a little longer. But on the other hand, it would have
been a bit too much otherwise what's up to physical condition. Apart
from that - nothing to complain about...
After a short break
the
magic continues with high and deep Rakkatakka vocals and a very deep
Dandan voice.
Okay, okay, I confess,
I'm not very good with all these special expressions. Whereby I'm not
quite sure, whether these expressions really do exist or the are rather
invented by the band.
However, it's the voices, which are the instruments in our case. That
sounds quite easy, but it is not. I assume it's very hard work and
lots of practicing to get this special sound. Well to get it really
straight, Van Canto are not a pure A cappella band, as there is this
drumkit, mentioned above in the beginning taking care of the rhythm The
imitation of guitar and bass are caused with the help of guitar amps,
but the effect of the wah wah pedal is purely done by a voice. And I
have to confess, whatever they do up there, it is well done. Only singer
Inga Scharf is fighting some problems in the beginning. And those are
called - nose bleeding. She herself excuses this with the very high
tunes, letting tiny venes explode. A helpful fan is helping her with a
whole pack of tishues. And so the handycap is soon desolved.
Van Canto are presenting
us a colourful plate of own songs, as well as adoptions of Manowar,
Nightwish and Iron Maiden's 'Fear Of The Dark'. So if you haven't heard
the kind of performance of such songs, it is hard to imagine...
(see also Videoclips)
meanwhile both lead voices, Inga Scharf and the other Philip Dennis „Sly“ Schunke,
can rest a little while the other's invite us to a little acoustic
performance. Therefore drummer Basti comes up front with his sort of
washboard and there is even a real guitar...
So well.... no real a cappella anymore, and they show, that they can not
only play with their voices...
After that, the show
continues as beefore, and fans get more and more enthusiastic.Frontman
Schunke is obviously surprised and lets us know, that he was told,
Munich's audiance is a rather difficult one, but he doesn't realize this.
Well,
actually it is difficult, don't worry about that dear Phillip. I
can tell you mayn stories about it. But you just caught the
right day with the exact right audiance, who is in a very good
mood. And last but not least - you're good.
What else do you want?! In fact with such great fan response, and
this happening in Munich, this is rather unusual. Congratulation
to a good night out. Van Canto have won this goal with their
extraordinary way of Heavy Metal entertainment.
That's it... http://www.vancanto.de/
