Hmmmm.... I'm
just thinking, where to start best here?! Not quite easy, as with Winger
we got one of these typical Hollywood Rockers (as I used to call 'em)
who, whenever they return, you compare them with their haydays in the
past. Most of all, if you've seen them playing live back then as I did. Since then many years have passed, and the group has been put on frozen ground for a pretty long time. Thanks god, the ice hadn't been that thick, so after about nine years of a break, it started melting . That was in 2002, and then once again there's been another sort of break until 2006, probably thinking about, whether it's worth it to get this whole thing rollin' again and if yes, how it would work out. - It did work out indeed, and this in almost the original line up: singer/bassist Kip Winger, guitarist Reb Beach, Drummer Rod Morgenstein, only guitarist Paul Taylor ain't with them anymore. So John Roth, who's already substitued Taylor from 1990 to 1993 and the break up, has returned for a second time.
Anyway, back to the
present. Almost exactly3 1/2 years ago, Winger were here last time in
Munich. And my first thought is: jesus wept!!! Has there so much time
passed since then? - Unbelievable. But well, I'm almost convinced, that,
the older we get, the faster one year seems to pass. And you can't look
that quick, another 12 months have gonne and even more...
Although you have to
admit, that all members in Winger have been great professionell
musicians, and they still are (of course -it's the same guys ain't it?)
But they nowadays put their only focus on their talents and less on
their visuall appearance, which is a little older and wiser, but still
pretty representative. And that's the main difference to back then,
where the visual aspect was sooo important as well. Nowadays, it's the
music doing the most talking first. And that's okay. We are no teenie
boy band anymore, are we?. |

But you can
turn it round however you want. Winger still live mostly from their past
hits like 'Miles Away', 'Easy Go' and 'Can'tGet Enought' just to name
the most important tracks. Not so much the new CD 'Karma', which is
truly a solid hardrock album with the slogan - back to the roots. But
whatever the farmer doesn't know, he touches only with a huge hesitation,
as we say so over here, - most of all here in Munich. Yeah well - Munich
and it's concert audiance, this is a special subject for itselves and
the horror of every tour promoter. And I fear, thing will not change for
a long time. Aprox. 200 Melodic Rock lovers have found their way into Munich's Backstage Halle. And I assume, about 3 quarters of it are people who have experienced Winger music already in the Eighties like myself. They are acting cool, practice a lot smalltalk and then watch the live show with crossed arms and serious faces. Afterwards all these people exchange their individual meanings and analysis, and everybody is convinced his or her opinion is the right one.
So, enough of all
that - past, news and Munich's Rock'n'Roll society. I have to confess
immidiately, that I missed the supportand ‚Five And The Red
One’ so I can't
tell you anything about them.
And my opinion is still the same, - if a frontman plays another instrument in addition to his vocal job, then it takes quite a bit of the generell energy on stage. But that's not his fault of course. I also do like Rod Morgenstein behind the drumkit You can realize, that this musician is very advanced. No surprise, as he runs at least 3 other projects besides Winger. Guitarist Reb Beach is a lot more outgoing as he is in Whitesnake, but well, I guess, he's got a bit more freedom here with Winger. More room to move means also more pleasure to play. And you can feel it. John Roth is a little more laid back, but does a great job as well.
Kip is holding his Karma, mixing it up with all those songs, which people mainly came here for. And he does indeed reach a solid response. The only real critics I've got is the length of the show with only 75 minutes. For us 'Over 40 Rock'n'Roll friends, this is simply too short. Apart from that,
this gig by Winger 2010 shows once again a lot of talents and gives us
some memories. But I do miss a little the sparkle best explained as the
chilly in my left ear channel :-)))) |

PS: There is a little funny story besides the Winger concerts on this same evening. Some of us have noticed this bunch of youn girlies all dressed somehow the same and having their hair died pink. After leaving the place late night, they made themselves comfi, as you can see on the pic below - in front of the main door. I have to admit this night was really chilly.
Usually it's the female fans of boybands acting like that before a show next way. But it's is a fact, that all these girls here have come for the band, shown on the logo below.
Hmmmm.... can anybody tell me, who the hell this is?! I thought always I know almost most of the biz, by beeing a musicjournalist. But well, there seem to be some lacks :-))) Or am I simply just too old for this....?! |
