It's taken
quite a while now, 'till Canada's Eighties Heavy Metal band Anvil ha
come back again to Europe. NO surprise though, as their 2005 european
tour went into their annals as the Disaster Tour, with aprox. 10 people
each show - yeah sort of.... So it is quite understandable that it
took them a little longer to get themselves up again. But frontman Lips
belongs to those sort of people, who never give in. He never quit, - not
in the Eighties after the band had their first slow down after the first
success, nor in the Ninties or after the, just mentioned Disaster tour.
Lips always has stood up again, and as he says: this is only music, my
music for what I live and die.
To strife Anvil's history just a little bit, there is just to mention,
that Lips a.k.a. Steve Kudlow, and drummer Robb Reiner have already
started to make music together in 1974. But it was in 1981 with their
first album under the name Anvil, entitled 'Hard'N'Heavy' which brought
them the attention from the media. The music on this disc ain't too
heavy, but includes great songs like ‚School Love’, ‚At The Apartment’
and
‚I Want You Both with Me’. One year later they released 'Metal On
Metal', which was influenced somehow by the New Wave Of British Heavy
Metal, and was much harder. Anvil kept to this line sinc then and 28
years and 13 studioalbums later including in addtion some
Compilations. Their latest release came out in 2007 and was entitled 'This
Is Thirteen'.
And then Anvil did this band documentary : "The Story Of Anvil",
directed by Sacha Gervasi. It's unmasked truth about a rockband who went
through liteatually everything. The movie received many great reviews
everywhere. Lips did risk everything to make this movie not knowing,
whether it would work out, But he believed in it.

It's been worth while for
sure. Because with this film, Anvil are truly back again on the surface.
And that was the point, when Lips and Robb said, now we are gonna go for
it - now or never.
Well, one thing is for sure. This current tour in Europe is no disaster
tour, but a solid well running trip with many old fans from back then in
the Eighties, who did remember this great band because of the movie. And
there are also many young kids, kids whe weren't even born, when the
Band's debut 'Hard'n'Heavy' came out.
Our 59:1 Club her in
Munich is well filled with about. 200 guests, not like back then in
2005, with only those 10 including myself.
The only weak spot
tonight is the fact, that their supportband Girlschool is not with them
here in this town. But on the other hand I'm not really upset about this,
as we all know that events start rather very late in this location, not
before 9.30 p.m. with the first band. And so sometimes concerts go till
far after midnight. In our case, Anvil hit the stage at almost exactly
10 p.m. and they are offering us 80 minutes pur 80s metal
nostalgica with quite a few highlights and witty moments and a high
entertaining level and... not to forget - some hell of an energy. I mean,
Lips and Robb ain't 25 anymore, - but you don't feel any loss. Lips
starts the set by jumping into the audiance and goes for an impulsive
instrumental right down there.
And that's what the fans
do like most. The magic word is: closeness to the audiance. At the third
song 'School Love' this living room here is exploding. Shortly after,
this is followed by a 15 minutes version of 'Mothra', another smashhit
from Anvil, which is, by the way, Lips favorite tune. Therefore he pulls
out a neat dildo and proves, a six string can also be played with such a
thing and receives it's orgasm.
Also the latest release get's it's spot with it's title track 'This Is
Thirteen'. By the way, Lips has mentioned within the interview before
the show, that they wills surely do another new album soon.
Anyway, to complete the band line up next to Lips and long time buddy
drummer Robb Rainer....
there is also Glenn
Gyorffy, also named Glenn 5 on bass. He's with them since 1996.
And at one point, Gelnn
presents us his very unique 12 string bass. To describe it a little
better, it is actually the main 4 strings, and evrey single one is
accompanied by 3 more smaller strings. To be honest, I've not spotted
such an exotic instrument very often yet It makes the sound somehow more
round and voluminous.
Also Robb does a great job showing us some great drum solos. - And of
cours one song mustn't be missing, which is 'Metal On Metal'.
At this point, I just wanna say, that there was no setlist available to
show you here.

Over all it has been 80
and some more very entertaining minutes, Anvil have given us including
Lips great sense of humour.
And I presume that with this movie documentary the band is celebrating
their second spring... Yeah well, maybe the third one.... :-)
never mind.
Oh, and before I forget, Anvil will be doing some more shows here in
Europe including Germany's Bang Your Head Festival in Balingen. So
whoever has missed them so far, there is still a chance to catch up. All
other and more infos can be found at:
