It's been 3 years now, that our american shockrockers of GWAR had been over here in Munich. On the other hand, this ain't that long, when you consider, that the boys had not been present for many years some while ago. But in any case, noone ever should come along anymore and say, that Gwar are copying finnish rocker Lordi, what's up to the visual aspect. Because it is indeed the other way round. - Our satiric Thrash-Metal, Hardcore-Punk and Shock Rock band was founded in 1985 by artists and musicians at the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond,Virginia. And apart from the costumes and make up, Gwar are as similar to Lordi as Right Said Fred to Motörhead. - Very amusing is another fact, when Lordi once told me, that it takes them aprox. 3 hours to slip into their outfits. Oderus Uringus a.k.a. Dave Brockie just told me, if it's needed, it takes Gwar 5 minutes to be ready to go....

ompared to Lordi Dave Brockie has no problem to be pictured without mask...

That's what  Gwar's Dressing Room looks like

Yeah well that's just one difference. And thanks to 25 year's of practice and experience, Gwar are doing better in most ways, then the fin's, who's star goes already slowly down the drain since their victory at the european Songcontest in 2006.
But stop it with all these comparing etc. which lead anyway only to the fact that you luv either one or the other - whosoever.
What's up to popularity Gwar are just experiencing some kind of second spring and are guests on many different events, shows etc. and also present frequently at the rather conservative TV broadcaster Fox News. Maybe this is due to the  humorous requital with many celebrities like O.J. Simpson, John Kerry, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Jerry Garcia, Osama Bin Laden, Michael Jackson, Al Gore, Paris Hilton, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Some of them have now been dropped of course, as they are past tense.
Anyway, currently Gwar with their frontman Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie), guitarist Balsac the Jaws of Death (Mike Derks), Gitarrist Flattus Maximus (Cory Smoot), Bassist Beefcake the Mighty (Todd Evans) and Drummer Jizmak Da Gusha (Brad Roberts) are right in the middle of their current european tour, appearing at many festivals, but also doing some clubshows. And every kid knows, that Gwars shows mostly go beyond good tastes. 'Lust In Space' is the slogan and also the title of the new album, the band is gonna present us in all different shades and colours.

Let's start the magic with Munich's local Metalheads Hell Inc, who are introducing here their debutalbum 'Damnation Offering'.

This band consists of very young guys, who's oldest member is just about 23 years of age. There is: Gerdi (Vocals), Dani A (bass), Patrick (Git), Basti (Git) and Michi (Drums). Watching them for a little while gives me the feeling, I've seen them somewhere, sometime before. But right now I haven't got a clue, what occassion that was, sorry about that. Never mind, as this Kids seem pretty selfconfident and are probably very happy themselves to be able to support Gwar tonight. The only bad aspect about their appearance is the fact, that not many people are inside the venue yet to check 'em out.

Most of the audiance is still outside the building enjoying the evening sun and a cigarette. But over all, our Backstage Werk ain't sold out anyway. I guess there are aprox. 5 - 600 fans here. At least - inbetween these people checking Hell Inc out, there is this guy with his grey tshirt and the blonde hair, watching Hell Inc's show while enjoying a cold beer. Yeah well, there is something to it with these costumes and masks. And as mentioned before, just in case - it would only take 5 minutes to change over.

For Hell Inc. this show is another step forwards to collect experience and practice for their mixture of Heavy Metal varieties.

Well okay, Gwar then took a little longer then 5 minutes to change over to their smart designer clothes.

Tourmanager Eddie has also asked fans to go to the merchstand to buy a tourbook, which they get signed personally by the band just before the show.

Well this fan rendevouz is happening a little later than planned at 9.45. And Gwar hit the stage not at 10 p.m. but 30 minutes later. In the frontrow you can spot all those die hard fans, dressed in white shirts, which get tainted during the show in red and green and blue. Later on these clothes get kept as trophies back home. Compared to these shirts, the kids themselves have got to wash the colour off again off themselves..- unfortunately :-)))

To make it short, there ain't much change within the show since last time. Almost all showelements have stayed, exept the Michael Jackson and George Bush deformation, which have been removed out of understandable reasons, I presume. Though I have the feeling something is missing here. If you have a look at the timetable (see above) you'll notice the rather short stage time of just about one hour. One reason therefore could be, that staying for a long time within these costumes must be murder. But in the end it is a little longer showtime as that.

so what else to say? A concert of Gwar is comedy pure and most of it beyond good taste. There is a lot os splatter like in the best horror movie, combined with 400 liter coloured water. However,in the end it's only dangerous for one person - the photographer and that's me. Because as every child knows, the worst poison for a camera is water or any other wet stuff. So once again, it's gotta be carefully approached in a respectful distance.

so even this here is recognizable from a distance :-)))

Gwar are surely aware of the fact, that much show or too  much show can draw the attention of people away from the music, so they actually do spare out the showbits at the most important or new songs, like the titletrack of the new album 'Lust In Space'.

Apart from that they've gotta be a little careful with some of their kind of humor, as here in Germany it could go down the wrong throat, as we say so. The problem is, that not everybody speaks well enough english to understand the right sense behind all this.

But most of the kids don't care anyway. They are only interested in the water battle of Waterloo ...eh sorry, the Backstage venue here and dance along to the rhythm of the irrealistic madness of Gwar.

Last but not least they are up there a little longer as said, and we do enjoy the sparkling showever  going for hard and heavy, heads off and bye bye. You can think about Gwar's music whatever you want, but it wouldn't be the same without this show, and vice versa. And to check out this all is certainly one experience more including a lot of surreal amusement - no more no less....
