When I recently mentioned to somebody, that I'm gonna go and see this band tonight, I got the answer: "well, I'm a little too old for this".- Hmmm.... I presume, there has been some exchanging with something else. Because Cathedral ain't no new band, but in fact do celebrate their 20th birthday this year. But maybe that person who feels to old for this, has thought in 40 or even more dimensions - who knows?. But never mind now... I just want to get straight, that Cathedral do exist for quite a while on the Heavy Metal heaven and their bandmembers are aged beyond 40 - most of them....
To define it a bit closer, - Lee Dorrian has christened his baby already in 1990, after he had left Napalm Death. - With the 'Guessing Game' the so called Doom Metalheads have released now their 10th album. Thanks god for that, because it's been pretty quiet during the past 5 years. And nobody really knew, what's gonna happen. But now Lee Dorrian and Co have woken up again from their winter's sleep and the new CD is a respectable pretty decent piece of music. And it has been pretty obvious, that there will be a tour to promote the album.
Well, here we go - Cathedral 2010, though there is only Lee Dorrian and guitarist Gary Jennings left from the original line up. Never mind, as it's them, who once created the musical style of the group.

In opposition to our english neighbours, the supportact 'Gates Of Slumbers' are from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

It's their second Europe visit and this band also go for the Doom Metal style. The threesome are Karl Simon (Voc/Git), Jason McCash (Bass) and 'Iron'Bob Fouts (Drums), and they are going since 1998. This european slot is supposed to support their latest and sixth release  "The Scourge ov Drunkenness".
On Stage these 3 guys rather look like bikerrock meets hellsangel with a full dominating sound. On the other hand the tenor of Gates Of Slumbers is a little strange, and we've gotta have to get used to it first. That's maybe the reason, why the small audiance is still hesitating within their enthusiasm, But at least everybody is listening conciously to the doom metal clouds. However - Gastes Of Slumbers have surely left some memory here...

Cathedral don't hesitate either, and start their set shortly after with a youthful founatin.... I almost want to say....

No seriously, but Lee Dorrian himself rather seems like 30+ than 40 something. Halleluja, how did he do it - please tell me? The second half of the band - by the way, consists of  Leo Small on bass and Brian Dixon on drums. Both have joined the group in 1995. So you can't really describe 'em as newbes, can you?!

Although Cathedral are, as I mentioned already above classified into the Doom Metal genre, their music is, compared to some other collegues of this style, somehow faster. For the average pleasure of all photographers here tonight, the band is playing up there on stage in almost complete darkness. Well, I guess, they have to beware an image or so. I do remember about one concert of Cathedral back in 1991 at the London Marquee Club. And I'm probably the only on in here, who've seen this band back then.
And I have to say, not much has changed. Lee Darrian has kept his huge aura and stage presence, somehow out of this world. And at every slightes break during his singing, he goes on his knee turning his back to us and probably goes on a soul trip.

Well, it's probably not that dramatic, despite maybe the imaginary suicid attempt with his mic cabelstring.

From the new CD 2 songs can be found on the setlist - the opner  Opener ‚Funeral Of Dreams’ und ‚The Casket Chasers’.Apart from that we got songs like 'Ghost Galleon' or the great 'Carnival Bizarre' from the same titled album in 1995, and of course 'Ride' just to name a few of the 12 pearls by name.

But it is in the end Lee Dorrian himself who impresses us most with his stage presence.

One thing is for sure, these english guys have stand the test here in Munich. And basically it's one of those shows, not leaving any request open. Almost none.... because personally I do miss my very favorite song of this band. And what else could this be than the legendary 'Midnight Mountain'.

But bands not playing their biggest hits or best songs, that's what we experienced here latey pretty often. Well, forget it.
It is a fact most of all, Cathedral are back again - and I hope they will stay......

Lee was a bit uncomfortible so Brian and Lee have spent some time
for the usual small talk.
