Live Review 589

Well, to be honest, I actually did hope 'till the very last minutes... - hope, that Mr. Lord would be 2 days earlier here in Munich and maybe shows up as sort of Special Guest at the Deep Purple show. But he had not. First of all, at that time he had been still far away in Berlin, and second, it's rather questionable, that he would have participated. Though his seperation from this somehow obscure english Rockband, how he describes them himself has left at least some traces. And if it's only the fact, that Mr.Lords wife is the sister of Purple drummer Ian Paice. And in general you can't throw some decades with his former band collegues just into the dustbin, even he had left this chapter behind him quite a while ago. - But however, as I said before, it would have not worked out anyway due to a dates conflict. .
In each case, the former Deep Purple keys wizard still pulls many Purple fans and not only friends of serious music. Okay, the place ain't sold out tonight here in Munich, but on the other hand 1.500 people is still pretty good. So no complains about that.

Our Philharmonie venue in Munich with it's posh atmosphere is just right for a Jon Lord performance. He is accompanied by the Filmorchestra Babelsberg lead be Scott Lawton and also the german Deep Purple Tribut band Demon’s Eye. Those are again:  Mark Zyk (Git), Maik Keller (Bass) and Andree Schneider (Drums). In addition of that, there are  Kasia Laska and Steve Balsamo for the vocal parts.

Well, the whole magic is devided into two parts with a 30 minutes break inbetween. The first part includes the entire Jon Lord 1979 Concerto of Group and Orchestra and the 1976 album 'Sarabande', which back then he had recorded with the Philharmonia Hungarica lead by german composer Eberhard Schöner. You could also name this disc a modern classical milestones. - (Of course Mr. Schöner is here tonight, though only watching from the audiance. Well, he lives close to Munich, so what?!
Back to Scene, which connects in it's musical form one barock suite of Sebastian Bach. Every track here reminds us on ancient dance, Phantasy Sarabande, Aria, Gigue, Bourree', Pavane, Caprice. It's almost pure classical music, but there are some rock traces inbetween. The orchestra does great  to follow Lord's path. Although some guest tonight later on complained about some too far out streched phases. I can only underline that. On the other hand it's maye only the missing right feeling  and love for classical music of some people, to appreciate the art of Sarabande.

(the official photographing was rather limited, so no pics of singers Kasia Laska and Steve Balsamo)

After the break in the middle of the set, the music is much more lighter and modern. And within Jon Lords Concert for Group & Orchestra you find  solotracks from his success album 'Pictured Within' and of course some Deep Purple covers. Singer Steve Balsamo is doing a great job by performing 'Pictured Within' and other's. Though he is not singing 'Perfect Strangers' as singer Doogie White, who has been participating in other cities has already done.
But never mind. Also female singer Kasia Laska increases her reputation  with her voice.
One thing is for sure, the audiance does like the second part of this concert much better. And whatever is up to the classic, but you can see and feel, that Jon Lord is still a rocker somehow.

The encore includes Purple's ‚Soldiers Of Fortune’ , and - ... what Purple did not play 2 days ago, Jon Lord does and finishes this evening with a great final - with 'Child In Time'. And so in the end he leaves a good generell impression of this evening.

that's it....
