Live Review 626

There ain't too many rockbands around anymore, who do exist longer than 30 years. And there are even less bands around, who are still in the same original line up. But with kings'X we got such an act here tonight in Munich live on Stage. About 3 years ago, the texan group were here last time in Germany. There ain't no new record, but only a live DVD, which was recorded 3 years ago in London during a show.
However, Kings'X are still: Doug Pinnick (Voc/Bass), Ty Tabor (Voc/Git) and Jerry Gaskill (Drums). For the very first time I saw this band live at the London Marquee Club in 1989, and it was love at first sight. These 3 musicians have always been involved in many other projects as well. And nowadays the see this band here rather as a hobby, embarking on tours, when they feel like, no matter, if there's a new release or not. - But I do remember still very well, when Kings'X played our Muffathalle here in Munich not too long ago. And this venue has a capacity of about 1.200 people. Tonight it's only the small 59:1 Club which is at least almost sold out with 200 fans. But more later, as after my rendevouz with Doug Pinnick for a small talk, there is still enough time left to head over to the Ampere club, where John Waite and bavarian rockers Bonfire play a special concert. Whereby John Waite is the support act, because our bavarian pride celebrates it's 25th anniversary.

It's not sold out though, but well filled with aprox. 400 guests. Most of the visitors are so-called scene animals from back in the Eighties, who have managed to crawl off behind their ovens once in a while to show up here. We are still somebody and want to be seen and see for ourselves. And of course all the Melodic Rock Fans won't miss out on seeing John Waite for the 3rd time within 2 years live on Stage. At least this time he's got a new album in his luggage for introduction. This is timing I'd say, becaue I arrive at the spot right at this very moment, when Waite starts to play. Nothing much has changed since last time, unless the fact, that the guitarist ain't Luis Carlos Maldonado anymore but Kyle Cook.

But nevermind. John Waite is still them same what he used to be, he looks the same and plays almost the same prayer exept some new tracks from the new album ‚"Rough And Tumble".

No, we surely can't complain about the live qualities of the former Babys and Bad English singer, who belongs to those oversea musicians, who still think, Germany is the Mekka of Music. Yeah well somehow it is indeed, as in good old Germany there are still enough possibillities to play live, and so got artists here touring, who don't exist anymore somewhere else. On the other hand it's okay, as we got the guarantee , that all those old rockers still find their way here. And in our case, John Waite probably experiences a 3rd spring time right now, if you consider all those years he's been off the trail.

However - I have the impression everybody likes what Waite is showing us, even all those Die hard Bonfire fans, who can't wait for their heroes.

Anyway, at this point I have to apologize, as Bonfire have almost played their whole set without me.

The magic starts at 9.45 p.m.  and I've got exactly 2 songs time left to catch some visual impressions and do one clip. Then I have to rush off again, to be back in time at the 59:1 for Kings'X, who are on Stage a little earlier then supposed at 10.05 p.m. For those I got a paid photocall and also I just don't wanna miss them....

That's why I can't provide a proper review on Bonfire, but only give you a slight impression with the pics,Clip and setlist given above.

And there we are again, where we started this evening out today with Kings'X - live on Stage right now.

Thanks to the absolute crowded place, we photographers do a little hard to find some free space, from where we can take pictures. In addition to that the rather low lights give us trouble as well. But therefore we receive a great show of a rockband, who are more or less intellectuall compared to our down to earth rockers of Bonfire. This is hard Rock'n'Roll with some brillant cords and riffs and Doug Pinnicks voice reaches more than 2 octaves...which sounds absolutely phantastic.

My Faves wie ‚Alright’, ‚Dogman’ and the one and only 'Over My Head' do of course belong to the setlist. And it's exspecially the last mentioned track... Doug is absolutely fed up with. But that's a thing like in the Rolling Stones. Everybody wants to hear Satisfaction...
and here it's about the same....

A Show without ‚Over My Head’ is no Kings’X Show. So what?! This hymn is included in the encore and gets performed in the extended 9 minutes version. And those 3 Americans have once again proved, what excellent musicians they are and still fit  and not having aged over the past 30 years. The show is finished at about 11.45 p.m. followed by a signing session. Respect, as those guys have realized, doing such signings, will help to sell some more merch. One thing's for sure, Kings'X  don't intend to quit yet, and there will be another new album this year - hopefully, and followed by yet another european tour. Congratulation, it's been brilliant and what else to say? - Go on for another 10 or 20 years ....
