Live Review 638

Who??? the question is once again, - as often before in some live reviews. But maybe, it gets more interesting for you, when I tell you, that I' ve seen and photographed the bassist of this outfit here a few years ago in front of 75.000 fans at Munich's Olympic Stadium. Yep, I'm talking about Daryl Jones, who came in into the Rolling Stones when Bill Wyman left in 1993. Well, of course that good man has never been a full member of the Stones and is still the touring bassist only. But whoever does know a little bit the wider range of musicianship, knows also that Mr.Jones is a brilliant artist and belongs to the best. Well of course, the Stones wouldn't go for less, would they. Although Daryl also has an individual carriere, which is widely appreciated by insiders.

So, and there we are at the point, where difficulties start at this event. Because of course most promoters put this fact and the name Rolling Stones on top of their ads for the Black Stone Raiders. And it does work indeed. Well not at the very young one's maybe, but surely at the middle and elderly generation between us. The problem is, that the music Daryl and the other two world class musicians play has much in common with the Stones, as the Petshop Boys with Sepultura. But who cares in first place, when the place is crowded, just as it is right here and now. What happens next... ?! The second fact at this group is, that Jones ain't even the main focus here on Stage. He rather keeps himself a little in the back. The focus is more or less mainly singer/guitarist Jean Paul Bourelly. And there we are again at the very first question - who? Because his name is also only known to insiders and sophisticated musiclovers.

Bourelly's spectrum reaches a wide musical range - from World, Jazz, Blues to Rockmusic. He spent time with Miles Davis in the Studio and recorded albums with Robin Trower, Rod Stewart, and appeared live with Jack Bruce and Terry Bozzio and many other's. Last but not least, there is Will Calhoun, who we all know from Living Colour. Will is also an ace on his intrument. Noone plays so many breaks so fast ...like him....

How this threesome got to know each other and got the idea for this tour together, I can't tell you, as there had been no time to talk before the show. But it's a fact, that these are 3 musicians of the superlative, who live their favourites with this shows.
Well, I haven't often seen our Village Club that much crowded, as tonight. Normally there are aprox. up to 50 visitors at other shows, but right now there are 3 times as many. And you've gotta fight for ever little space in here. But to repeat myself, it's only because of the right promotion.
The Black Stone Raiders are starting off about 9 p.m. and within minutes it gets rather quiet in here. No, you won't get to hear any 'Satisfaction' or 'Brown Sugar' or anything like it. This here is very nice fusion sound with all elements of music, I would say so. And some faces in the crowd turn into questionsigns within shortest time. Bourelly shows us, how to mix cords up to absolute perfection, but it looks so easy. the voice is rather a matter of taste, but suits very well. Will Calhoun, who's never play on another drumkit than his own, proves once again, what great talent he is, exspecially in a 15 minutes solo. And the interesting fact is, despite the overdimensional length of his solo, it doesn't get boring a single second.  Only Daryl Jones holds a little back, what's up to solos.

Thanks god, there are still some friends of good music out there, who appreciate this kind of complex stuff, including myself. Because whatever the threesome put out here on stage is simply discribed as brilliant, without any doubts. But you've got to have the understanding to recognize it. And that again is done maybe by about 30 out of 150 in here.
And that's last but not least the reason, why there ain't really any requests for an encore. As good as this is, it doesn't get the right appreciation, what it actually deserves. Yeah well - we are not here at the Rolling Stones and also not at some average day to day music.

Your fault, if you only relay on a name.I mean there is still the internet for information, in case you're not sure about an act. I myself do pretty easy, as I knew what to expect. And yes I did like, what I got, though it's this thing of getting used to it. My advise: - it's a must for every advanced musiclover, but don't touch it, if you only want to dance along with the music...  It’s as easy as that....
