“We are Motörhead, and we play Rock’n’Roll“ – For more than 30 Years, Lemmy Kilmister started every single show with these words. And I myself witnessed this for about 15 - 20 times. Tonight, November 26 2011 here in Munich, he didn't say so for the first time, as less as some other typical Motörhead bits and pieces are missing. Why what and how it happens, I'm trying to figure out within this review here. I say 'try', because whether we get an answer to this or not, ain't sure yet. It's a fact first of all, that Motörhead's cultstatus has increased for quite a bit within the last years. Whether it's due to those fans from back in the Seventies and Eighties, who have passed on their Hard Rock desire. Or is this new popularity due to the cooperation with Beavis & Butthead a while ago? Because as some elderly of us know, Lemmy and Co have not had always such good times. So I remember very well in the early Eighties, where the audiance often consisted no more than about 50 to 100 people. Therefore Lemmy looked a little more cheesy. But no surprise, we all don't get younger, do we..... In each case, the current
wave of success is not because of an increase in musical quality.
Motörhead's music is simply 3 chords, which are repeating istselves
frequently. And that's why so many songs sound similar. Not to forget
the incredible noise pollution, for what this band has always been
famous for.
Unfortunately out of
logistic reasons I do miss this band. But however, for Graveyard this
supportslot on the Motörhead Tour is a real joker, such as this year is
pretty successful for the band. And though they have only the opener job
with 30 minutes showtime including the very early take off... there is
this huge chance to win a much wider audiance, they usually would get
within a club tour on their own. |
Loaded definately got a better deal here than back then, but they haven't calculated with the audiance. Because our crowd here is a 1000 times more Headliner orientated, then the audiance were back then at the Crüe. And so the battle of the former Guns'n'Roses guitarist is lost already, before he even has played the first tune. Although he and his band mates really try hard to give their best. But they do not receive more then a very few yells and hands in the air. Well, mind them, these musicans are just too unknown over here yet, as well as their music, which doesn't have any recognition effect. And what the farmer doesn't know he hesitates to eat - as we say so. Hard to day, and no sight about the famous sparkle, making things really magic. But Loaded's music is just not made for this. And the fact about the Guns'n'Roses past tense doesn't help at all, though the very last song is a dejavu of Duff's past within the Glam Rock icons. |
I'd
suggest, to get really noticed here in Germany, Loaded should rather
think about coming on a smaller solo club tour. Then at such a tour, the
right fans will show up, those who can appreciate Duff. But in here
Loaded rather leave a paintless and lost shade. And the huge venue and
thousands of fans don't help. Never mind now, he says thank you to the audiance and to Motörhead for the supportslot, goes off, and .... is forgotten again... Because all 6.000 in here are only waiting for Lemmy anyway... http://duff-loaded.com/
Okay, no much taling, lights off, spots on and a hell of sirens and
Motörhead come on and start off with no long intro into 'Bomber' and a
Lemmy Prayer.... |
And as I mentioned before, there is no ‚We are Motörhead, and we play Rock’n’Roll. First of all our Hardrock God in black leaves almost all announcements between the songs to his guitarist Phil Campbell. And this one takes also care for most of the movement on stage, as the boss doesn't bent a toe behind his mike. Maybe one moe sign of aging - who knows.... Oh, and something else is different. But first after several minutes of thinking I realize that Lemmy ain't singing with his head bent towards sealing and towards the mike beeing installed upwards down. It's only slightly bent, almost even. But this is not, what's all about fortunately. - Well the sound conditions in here are as usual a desaster, never mind where you stand and fall in here. But thanks to the enormous noise, the one Motörhead is famous for, the bad sound is swallowed in a drain somehow. And Lemmy himself, meanwhile almost 66 years old, don't care about beeing half deaf... so don't give a bloody thing. Some flying body comes sailing across the pit, taken away by the first aid. So it doesn't get any boring. Lemmy's right hand side Phil, who names himself meanwhile Philip, maybe because it sounds more sophisticated, and who is taking care for the famous 3 chords and dancing the physical swing with his Al Capone hat up there, is taking care that it never gets boring. Mickey Dee's existence you can only guess, as there is nothing to see of him behind the huge drumkit, exept some blonde hair... |

And it's the
youngsters in the crowd waiting their last adrenalin and taking a risk
for life in the middle of the hurricane. For them Lemmy has developed
into a cult figure and a myth. He himselfs doesn't see things that way
and takes things easy, but with some moods. As long as there is a
slotmachine in his dressingroom and there are enough drings provided, he
is happy and pleased and doesn't need much more for his immer peace. Back to the action on stage, where the wall of sound is broken. We get offered a Best off package including 2 new songs. Who cares anyway - 3 chords are 3 chords no matter what... Although the crowd does
think it's already christmas, most of all when Lem goes for another
Orgasmatron in a dark green aura. |
‚Killed By Death’
and ‚Iron Fist’ are making the party perfect. And of course we get
an encore. No Motörhead Concert without 'Ace Of Spades', the definately
biggest hit of the band. 'Overkill' closes down the sound thunderstorm
And
hey..... hold on, what's that?! – Lemmys grey brain cells ain't
lost yet and in the very end - last but not least before he leaves the
stage, he finally shouts: |
