Actually I'm not supposed to be here tonight as originally planned, as I was scheduled to take pictures at the concert of Sinead 'O Connor in Munich. But this lady decided to cancel her appearance just 3 hours before showtime due to illness. Yeah well, maybe the translation for this illness is rather - lack of ticket sales, you never know. However, it's a fact, that I've lost a photocall, but therefore won the chance to see a band, I'm musically much more interested in. And this threesome is playing tonight at our comfi Village Club in Habach near Garmisch towards the austrian border.
Yeah well, I know, first of all 99 percent of the readers here will ask - who? And this question is truly understandable. Because this band construction ain't going on for too long yet, consisting of guitarist Vernon Reid of Living Colour, the exeptionell Bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, who had played with Jazz icon Ornette Coleman and with artists such as Willy DeVille and many more. And there is drummer Grant Calvin Weston, who is often named as the most important Free Funk Jazz drummer. in the whole world.
All three musicians are involved in countless other things and have to fight with their schedules, just to make sure to find some space to really do or better play, what they really wanna play just for fun. And in our case here, it's the Free Form Funky Freqs where the enjoyment reaches another level.

It's  sunday night and the timing ain't neccessarely the very best one. On one hand the weather conditions outside don't really challenges everybody to leave the house anymore, and on the other side, tomorrow morning another working week is starting, which means getting up early. And so we only find the usual house guests and some more at the Village to check out this supergroup, - that's what you really could name them. But be careful, as it is indeed exactly this kind of perfectionists in music who cause some misunderstanding at the average audiance. The problem is, that those super talents often don't realize , in how far they are getting into their own musical artistic art. Whatever they find pretty easy listening themselves, for some friends of good music this is a book with seven seals. And the risk is high, that for some people this is simply too much all those curved and difficult tune constructions. where the key notes and the rhythm constantly defines itselves all over again.
It is already impressing to check out Vernon Reid's space shuttle pre show

(a typical Vernon Reid Solo)

That's what I call this wood of pedals and cabel salad and all these buttons and laptop etc. With all that the 2 times Grammy Award winner invents some new exotic note DNA beyond the moon, which sometimes spreads out into many spectral sound waves. Whatever still develops into straight rock tunes in Living Colour, this here goes rather into a complex diverse sound experiment. Concerning bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and drummer Crant C.Weston  this ain't that much obvious, as They are happy with only one instrument. Although both show some impressing outputs in a brilliant jump of quants inbetween half tunes and the normal frequence area.

On the whole, this gig - how shall I discribe it best? is a very special kind of performance. It's a 99% instrumental piece of music with only very few breaks inbetween. And so I have started the video below somewhere inbetween and it is ending sometime inbetween, just to get an idea, what this is all about.

No, we are not at a Dream Theater or King Crimson concert. The Free Form Funky Freqs are going for a very unconvential sort of performance, one, which consists of Free Jazz and fusion and more, one for what you have to have a lot of musicial understanding, one that reaches from the earth to the Andromeda Galaxy. But despite all that, these 3 musical aliens can manage, that no single minute of this gets boring. All those breaks and key changes are making this show a roller coaster ride, where you never know, whether it goes steep down or up around the next corner, if you know what I mean by that. And this is it, what makes it pretty exiting. This experience of those 3 brilliant musicians lasts aprox. 2 hours. For some this is high mathematics, but for others such as myself, who knew what to expect, this ego trip is indeed some great experience. Last but not least: operation well done, patient half dead or truly satisfied and healed.
