Although Stephen Marley can look back onto eight Grammys so far, compared to his father Bob, who has never seen a Grammy, he hasn't got one thing, and that's cult status. Mind me, that lack is not due to a missing talent or aura. It is simply due to the fact, that current times don't allow any cult figures anymore. Back then in the Sixties Bob Marley came along beeing something new and very innovative in the large music world. - Apart from that Bob is supposed to have more than 40 children, but only five including one adopted kid with his wife Rita. Stephen Marley is the second oldest son behind Ziggy. And he now is 40 years old, older then his father ever became.

With his real brother's Stephen formed the band  Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, and they were pretty successful. In 2007 his first soloalbum 'Mind Control' came out. This was followed 2 years later by the 'Mind Control Acoustic' Album. And past year ‚Revelation Part 1: The Root of Life’ came along.
As I mentioned before, for those three releases Stephen Marley received 8 Grammys and is on top of the Reggae Music scene. Although here in Europe he has to think in a little smaller terms. And instead of huge arenas, on his current european tour, he performs at our small Backstage Halle here in Munich. But that one is crowded that much, that no smallest rasta dreadlock fits in anymore.
Well, I confess, in the beginning I'm a little sceptical, as in the past I didn't make that much experience with this musical style. What is to realize straight away, when entering the venue, is, that there is no Marihuana smoke lying in the air or anything like this. And you won't find any stage excesses in that way... Stephen is accompanied by a black band and two black female background singer. Inbetween a young blonde australien singer joins him on stage, but I can't remember her name.

Stephen's Repertoir includes great originals written by him but also some of those great tunes of his father, just to get the recognition over here straight, as his own song material is not that well known over here. But you better bet, his dad's songs are very well known in Europe and all over the world just as Buffalo Soldier' and 'Jammin' and many more....

Fortunately and despite my fear, this here does not develop into a hardcore Reggae concert, thanks to the commercial way this is performed, but it's great for a sing and dance along party. Stephen's slogan is:  ‚Do You Like Reggae Music’ ?
And what follows next, is a fireworks of great tunes and an even better mood in here, caribian feeling, hot rhythm and the spirit of Bob Marley is sailing across our heads.

Halleluja, who'd have thought this? What a nice surprise this is!!! And one thing is for sure, this guy, who looks so similar to his dad, has deserved his Grammys for sure. Though he will probably never become a cult figure himself, he carries the heritage along, transfering it to a new generation, and he is just as good, as his dad used to be, maybe even better.
The only little difference between him and his dad is, that he obviously lives a little healthier. And so Bob Marley is allowed to live within his son, who is currently trying hard to get us europeans to like the Rastafari even more. The result is: he's made it - at least in Munich....
