2006

This is the longest you have ever taken to record an album. How comes?

Yeah, I think everybody knows those reasons though. We did a lot of European summer tours which were really good offers, but in all that going on, Rubin had a situation with his company, so he moved over to Warner Bros., and so rather than release a record at the last minute on one company, we waited until he got himself situated and we’re gonna release this record through Warner. So that took like a year and a half or so. So it’s the usual shit that happens with every record that we’ve done, there’s something going on with the record company and then we have to wait. Or we’d rather do that, then get lost, with the other company that we’re leaving, because they really won’t put as much energy into it knowing that we’re no longer gonna be with them. So rather than take that chance we figure we’d wait until he got himself situated, and give the new record company or the new distribution company something better and something new, kind of like a fresh start.

Rick hat seinen Vertrieb sehr oft gewechselt, stimmts ?!

Rick has been changing distribution quite frequently, hasn’t he?

Immerzu!

All the time, all the time. And actually to suffice the fact that we’re leaving, I’m trying to think of who we were leaving, I think it was Sony, Island, we did that live DVD, the “Reign In Blood”-DVD, so they got a good chunk of that and that turned out to be really well. Actually they got two DVDs which were really good, the “War At The Warfield” and then “Reign In Blood”, and both did extremely well for them so they should be happy.

Slayer Fans sind sehr treu und ergeben. Sind das jene die speziell auf der „War At The Warfield – DVD gezeigt werden?
Slayer fans are pretty devoted, aren’t they? Especially those on the “War At The Warfield”-DVD…

Yeah, they’re crazy fuckers. And that was just the States, can you imagine what they would have done in Europe? I think it would have been just as or even more crazy, because it’s a different attitude from Europe and America, you know. In Europe they’re very loyal. Europeans are very loyal, very enthusiastic and excited, and in America there is some excitement, but the majority to me, I mean, to my opinion Americans are kind of spoiled. They’re spoiled to the music scene, because they’re exposed to it so often, you know, whereas in Europe you’re limited, so kids get a chance to go somewhere and see a band, they’re gonna go, you know, and they’re gonna be excited, and in America they get excited but they don’t show the enthusiasm that the Europeans do as a whole, and that’s the difference between the two continents, which to me I enjoy that, the enthusiasm, because people get really excited, you know, and we get both of those in America, but it’s more so in Europe and it’s genuine in Europe.

Wie gehst Du mit dieser Zuneigung um?
How do you handle that devotion?

– okay so what?

You keep your distance, you know, in both worlds they’re really hard to, you know, they’re unpredictable. So I shake their hand, nice to meet you, but they keep a distance and they kinda scare me sometimes. Jeff was telling a story yesterday about some kid who was like doing this (makes ugly face + devil´s claw), and Jeff asked: “Dude, what’s wrong with you?”, and the kid’s like: “Nothing, you know, Slayer” – “Mellow out, dude, relax.” I think that happens, because they get nervous and they don´t know how to act or react, so they act that way.

Is it true some of the songs are two years old by now?

Yeah, they were demoed, you know, we had material together, and then Kerry and Dave got together at Dave’s place and recorded the majority of the songs and demoed them, and that was done in 2004, in March, actually I think it was March 2003 that I got a disc from Jeff, and then one from Kerry that gave me an idea of at least what they were thinking of doing, and then a year later Dave and Kerry got together after they had already been rehearsing to working out the stuff and made that demo, but they’ve been around for a while, a long time. And in the course of those years some of them got dumped, because we each have an opinion of stuff and nonchalantly everybody says what they think about certain stuff, and then the person who wrote it will go: “Alright, well, nobody seems to like this, so that goes, nobody seems to like that so that goes”, and then you take the better parts of stuff and try to come up with something new, and I know that’s what they do.

So it really is the best rehearsed album ever?

Yes, we started recording this at the tail-end of February, first week of March, and in 7 to 9 days we were done with the drum tracks and then another week after that all the guitars were done, and bass, and the process that’s been taken the longest is the compiling of stuff, making sure we have everything we need, cleaning up the drums here and there, cleaning up the guitar sounds here and there, you know, a lot of what goes on, studio stuff, they’ve been doing a lot of that in between, which has given me time to do scratch vocals, listening to what I’ve done and then come back and do the songs with more confidence, you know what I mean, and in working out ideas and working stuff out. And right now I need to go back and clean up some vocal stuff that I heard and that I didn’t like and tried different things that everybody suggests, and then we got one song and I’m done, done vocals. And there’s a few more solos, and then that’s done.

How importand is Dave Lombardo for the band?Has his return unleashed a new "old" Spirit?

Things haven’t really changed, you know what I mean, you talk about Dave being back, right, things haven’t changed.  They’re still the same. It’s kind of like where we left off last. His drumming is fucking amazing.  Paul is a great drummer, but you can tell that that’s Dave playing the drums. And he brings that free style back into the band, and then the drum sound that we got, it sounds really. I think a lot of that stuff is really good, the music is really good.

So habt Ihr alle Eure Differenzen beigelegt?
So you´ve solved all your differences by now?

Yeah, well, you grow up. You grow up, and then I think Dave’s experience by himself, doing what he did on his own, I think he realised that something that me, Jeff and Kerry have always realised that’s unconditional, you know what I mean, that you have to learn to live with each other kind of thing and you have to learn to accept each other and know that without the other this wouldn’t be here, you know, I think Dave experiences outside of Slayer, I think he was able to learn a lot of that and realised it wasn’t really that bad. (laughs)

Ihr seid jetzt schon sehr lange zusammen: 25 Jahre.
You’ve been together for quite some time now: 25 odd years.

Mann das ist eine lange Zeit. Leute sind gekommen und gegange

That’s a long time man, people have come and gone. I mean, when we did our first album “Show No Mercy”, I would have been happy with that, you know, if it hadn’t, you know, I got an album, and that album would be up my wall. I never thought that I’d have ten records on my wall, you know, I never would have thought that, even now I look back and think: “Fuck. How many records have you got?”

Werdet Ihr das feiern?
Are you going to celebrate that?

Wir sind jetzt seit 1981 zusammen. Unsere erste Scheibe kam 1983 heraus.
We’ve been together since ’81, our first album came out in ’83, but we’ve been together 25 years as a band, but professionally making records since ’83. We’re gonna celebrate by doing a big old tour, I guess, I don’t know. We’re not really big on celebrations, you know what I mean, unless our record company or our management does something, it’d be like: “So you’ve been together for 25 years? Alright.” (laughs) It’s like, OK, thanks.

Plus there is 20 years of “Reign In Blood”, which is widely considered to be your masterpiece, isn’t it?

Yeah, we beat the punch by releasing that “Reigning Blood”-DVD last year. That was the big old thing, but you’re right, it’s 20 years of “Reign In Blood”, but I’m sure everybody’s gonna make a big thing about that

And what's Rick's part in t he puzzle?

A: His part in the puzzle is to respond to anything that we send him. (laughs) You heard three songs, there’s five songs that actually we’ve done and we’ve sent that to Rubin, so we’re waiting for him to give the stamp of approval so we can continue doing what we’re doing, because we don’t want to continue if he’s gonna voice an opinion, you know, he’s still part of the game, but he’s gotta give his stamp of approval before we could continue and before we really wanna continue actually, because you don’t wanna start doing stuff and get it to where you think it’s great and then have someone come in and be like: “No, no.”

So he is in fact the record company boss?

A: The EP, the executive producer, the man that signs the cheques, you know. So we send him a disc and we’re waiting for him to at least give some kind of response to what we’ve done, but until then we’re just gonna keep finishing up what we started.

Im Augenblick seid Ihr die einzige Band auf American Recordings?
Right now, you’re the only band on American Recordings, aren’t you?

A: Yeah, I don’t really think he has anybody on his label, does he? Honestly. I’m trying to think. We’re the only band on his label. I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing, you have to ask him. But you’re right, ‘cause there’s a lot of stuff that he’s done, but they’re not a part of his label. The only person was Johnny Cash, who was actually on the American label, and that was it. I think it’s only been Johnny Cash. Well, that’s crazy. He’s worked with everybody that’s not on his label. He works with people that have nothing to do with his label.

You’re 45. Ever had the feeling you are getting too old for this?

I’m not getting too old, because I don’t feel my age, I don’t think about it. I’m getting tired of what I do as far as travel, but that’s got nothing to do with age, it’s just got to do with being on the bus, off the bus, in the air, on the ground, just travel. The routine is just, you know, even the fact that you show up to a venue and you show up early to do a soundcheck or whatever, and then you’re there for like 8 hours and you can’t do nothing. You can’t go out into the crowd and watch the bands, you have to watch them from behind the stage, and even from behind the stage you can’t, because people see you, everyone wants to say “hi” to you, and people get upset because you run away. But I like my privacy and so I sit in the dressing room or the bus, and then it’s 8 hours of that. And then when you’re done with those 8 hours you play, which is the most exciting part, an hour and a half and you’re just out there playing and you’re always having a great time, you know, you’re smiling, they’re smiling, everybody’s happy and then when you’re done, you know, when you’re done everybody wants to see you, everybody wants to come say “hi”, and you’re like: “Fuck”, so you close the doors, you get changed and then you wait, look around and make sure no one’s looking, and then you run to the bus. And then you sit there and wait till you have to leave. And then it’s either to the next town or the airport hotel so you can get on a flight the next morning to go to another gig, you land, you drive three hours to the venue and then you sit and wait.

Und wenn Du einfach weniger tourst?
Can’t you simply do less touring?

It doesn’t matter if you cut it back, that doesn’t matter, because no matter when you do it, that’s the routine, you have to put up with the routine, you know, and if you’re not driving from town to town every night, you know, in Europe, most of the times we spent in Europe on these recent tours that we did, it’s like three or four shows in a row and they’re festivals, so there is really no soundchecking, but it’s this waitind and always doing the same routine over and over again.

And there goes the glamorous life of a rock star?

That’s the glorious life of a rock star that everybody is anxious of. They’re like: “You guys are supposed to have fun, you dudes party”, and it’s like, you know, when you’re at a younger age I guess you can do that, but at some point or another you have to grow up, you have to become responsible and in all honesty I think if we were to keep doing what we have been doing all these years we’d be looking like the Rolling Stones. We’d be doing a movie called “Monsters Of Rehab” (laughs). But you grow up and you become responsible, and there’s so much business that’s involved with what we do now, you know, when we did our first tours, it didn’t matter. We were fucking having fun, but then the minute you sign to a major label, business becomes involved.

Plus you´ve got two little kids now, don’t you?

Yes, you know, and I try to bring them with me whenever it’s possible. I try to accommodate them if they come for a week, two weeks they come out on the road, you know, and they go through the same routine I go through, the routine I just explained to you, and they hate it. My son likes to come out but after two weeks, you know, “time to get up, we gotta get in the hotel, time to get up, we gotta go do soundcheck” – “We just go to sleep.”

Ist Dein Sohn Slayer Fan?
Is your son a Slayer Fan?

He is a big Slayer fan. Yeah, they both are. Actually, they’re big fans of that genre of music. They have a broad spectrum of music that they enjoy, actually my little girl’s favourite song and my wife’s is “Dead Skin Mask”, those two really like that song, and my son really likes “Raining Blood”. He starts headbanging and going round in circles. It never fails, it doesn’t matter. You put that record on and they both start running around in circles and banging their head.

Wie alt sind die Beiden  jetzt?
 How old are they?

Six and nine, yeah, they enjoy it. Like I said, they like coming out on the road but after a while it kind of beats them up, because they can’t get any sleep, and they’re always tired, and then they always wanna go out and do stuff. And I tell ‘em: “I can’t go out”, you know, “You guys can go out with mum, I can’t go out with you, people won’t leave us alone, and you guys can have more fun without me” – “But we don’t wanna go without you” – “Well, then you can sit back here with me.” So they sit watch cartoons and whatever’s on the tele. So it’s not as glamorous as what people make it out to be. They re’s just so much involved that people have no clue.

Which is probably for the better, isn’t it?

No, ‘cause sometimes you wish people knew what you went through, ‘cause then they could understand your moodiness sometimes. They would be able to understand like: “What’s wrong with him today?”, because I’m fucking fed up and I'm sorry about that... Cheers
