He's one
of the very big ones and fills 10.000 seater venues and play huge stadions.
At least in his home country Australia, where John Butler is already a
multi platin selling superstar. Over here in Europe he just steps into the
ocean of our musicscene, the water reaching his ancles. And he's trying to
swim himself free. To be honest I confess, four weeks ago, I didn't even
know about him. But now I do even more. This man has got a huge aura
despite he's just 31 years of age, which is developing fully
live on stage performing his music. Because actually John rather looks
like a alternative vegetarian with his long dreadlocks and this funny
beard, the at least 3 sizes too big pair of trousers and this funny old
fashioned shirt, streaming an attitude saying - let the sunshine in
- smoking his little marihuana pipe on a pacific island beach....
:-)
But he's not. He's here, tonight right now with his two mates on bass and
drums, playing a purely acoustic show which is so rich in it's melodies,
that the electric guitarpower ain't even missing. Mr. Butler takes another
instrument for almost each song. One time it's just a guitar, then it is a
banjo for a change or some strange looking - something, whereby I honestly
not know, what it's named. Sorry about that disknowledge of mine.
The music is a cocktail of blues, melodic songs with those individuell
rhythm, what makes the music of John Butler so special and has shot him
into the sky of fame in Down Under. Meanwhile this artist has already
released three albums and has developed into a tight institution in his
home country. John's music consists of pop, rock, spiced with Blues
and even some folk tunes and in the very end, you can even make out some
reggae tunes. For me personally there are some little weak spots inbetween.
But they don't last long and after all, I and all the others in here, have
got the impression of a pretty successful performance.
One thing I do not understand. The John Butler Trio has not been promoted
very much in the german media yet. Although the show tonight, had to be
transfered into a bigger venue, one day before, because of so many
ticketsales. Last but not least there are aprox. 1.000 rather young fans
here enjoying the australian kinda entertainment. What a thrill! To me it
seems, John is really moved emotionally by all this applause, he probably
didn't calculate with such a strong reaction. And he ain't seems to be
'the big star' character wise. He hardly leaves his place on the left side
on stage, where he plays his instruments sitting on a chair most of the
time. same time showing such a huge talent, as well as his bassist , - and
drummer, who seems to be an original australien...
However, I'm pretty sure, next time the John Butler trio is coming over
here, they will play even bigger venues, and they truly deserve it.
And yeah - they come... As we all know - bumerangs usually are returning.....
