...
and once again, this is a concert, where I dare to say, that there are
not many people tonight apart from me, who have experienced Winger
already in the eighties. Finally I saw 'em supporting the Scorpions in
London and one solo slot at the legendary Marquee Club. And yes of
course I draw immidiately comparison in front of my spiritual eye.
Result is: there is almost no comparision to the past, exept the fact,
that it's the same people - almost and some familiar tunes. Now, like I
have mentioned very often within live reviews - we all don't get younger
and we change over the years, some of us more, some less. That's life.
Only the music from the past is the same, including some new tunes,
which have definately gone in a bit different direction stylistically.
The new reunion CD of Winger, which is simply named 'IV' includes more
sort of modern rock, a bit harder a bit colder and not so personal than
the old songs. Impersonal, that's what I'd call it, but that's more or
less a matter of taste.
Over all, the new version of Winger include three original members,
which is quite a lot. Kip Winger himself, Rod Morgenstern on drums and
Reb Beach on guitar, who also is in Whitesnake as we all know.
Morgenstern's main occupation therefor are the Dixie Dregs and his old
mate Steve Morse, where he has put his main focus on. But presently
you've got to have some more perspectives to survive as a average well
known musician.
Probably it was Kip Wiinger's personal wish to reform his eighties band
again. And it's been pretty lucky, that Beach and als Morgenstein have
had the time to join again. Keyboardist/guitarist Paul Tayler did
not come back. Instead Kip has recruited guitarist John Roth, who's been
with Winger already in the early nineties. And there is Keyboarder Cenk
Eroglu, who did not come with them on this european slot right now. So
Kip plays the bass in exchange with the keys and uses some samples to
get it right. Yep it works.
..
To less fans
tonight unfortunately. But this has got nothing to do with the little
popularity the band still owns, but more or less due to the fact, that
this event has been fixed with pretty short notice of just five days.
Little luck within this misery is the fact, that this only german date
is here in munich. Misery for the promoter, though he pulled every straw
he could touch to get the date into the press. One thing is for
sure, munichs inside scene has found their way to here tonight. It's
just a question whether they paid to get in or not. Like I
mentioned before, it's only about 150 nostalgic souls, who are here
to find out, whether Winger is still the same as they used to be in the
eighties.

The
leatherpants are past tense and also the glamerous catwalk look has been
exchanged to a rather casual every day's life style. The long hair is
still there but without the hairspray. And this here are not five male
models, coincidentally happen to be musicians, who pushed up the senses
of exspecially all the females in the audiance with their smashing sound.
But this here are four guys in the mid-fourties, who have lived their
life's already to a certain extend and nowadays put their focus mainly
to the musicianship. And this one is brilliant. No doubt about that.
Yeah they still rock. But with a difference, not as explosive anymore
and not so much provoking anymore. And the first row doesn't consist
onyl of girlies anymore, who get in trance at the sight os too much
rockstar sexappeal.
The new songs feel a bit strange. Guess we first have to get used to it.
They get accepted with a bit hesitation. First when the band starts
playing the melody of 'Incognito' and later 'Can't get Enough' and 'Easy
Come...' movement comes into the crowd. Encore of course - 'Miles Away',
Wingers biggest hit, they ever had.
Over all, this
gig here is a decent performance, where you realize pretty quick,
that these guys know their art and talent. I just hope they do see the
whole intermezzo: operation Winger 2 as a nice change from everything
else and don't expect too much of it or even a huge new carriere. To be
honest, I've got some doubts about that.... |
